A Bit About Generals

Crown of Glory: Europe in the Age of Napoleon, the player controls one of the crowned potentates of Europe in the Napoleonic Era, wielding authority over his nation's military strategy, economic development, diplomatic relations, and social organization. It is a very thorough simulation of the entire Napoleonic Era - spanning from 1799 to 1820, from the dockyards in Lisbon to the frozen wastes of Holy Mother Russia.

A Bit About Generals

Post by malthaussen »

Not that France really needs any more generals, but I was surprised to see that Desaix, LaSalle, and St. Hilaire didn't make the cut. Especially Desaix, who was Boney's best bud there for awhile. Also, what do the devs have against Soult? While his performance in Spain was pretty bad, so too was that of many other marshals, like Ney for example, who is rated quite well. Obviously one can alter Soult's numbers if he pleases, but I do wonder why he's so poorly rated in the straight version.:)

A different point: how about adding a special capability to a general that increases artillery performance? Many of the generals of the era were quite adept at the use of this arm, including M. Buonaparte himself.

Lasty, a feature suggestion. How about letting your diplomats try to bribe generals away from other nations? It was not unheard of for a general in this period to serve a foreign master -- John Paul Jones comes to mind (okay, he was an admiral.:)), but examples could be multiplied. Maybe different generals could be rated differently for loyalty -- you couldn't bribe away Archduke Charles or the Duke of York, but somebody like Massena would probably go to the highest bidder... this would be intricate to implement, but wouldn't it be cool?
