Contract extensions

Post by conomark »

I am playing using a fictional league and fictional players.

I was just wondering if there is any advantage to offering a contract extension to a player during the season as opposed to waiting until the season was over and offering it before the drafts started?

I try and sign any player with trade market value before the trading deadline so if they decline the contract extension or are older players and won't sign unless they get a long term contract that will probably extend beyond their usefulness as a player I can trade them off and get something for them.

Ditto jono's point.

Likewise, if an older player isn't going to renew with me, I'll try to get his younger replacement more playing time during that season, so he's more likely to 'step up' next year when he has to.

In fact, I never wait until the season is over, for any contract offer. [:)]

Nice strategies, both. Unfortunately, the AI doesn't yet seem to understand either of these, so it's easy to gain a significant advantage for your franchise by employing them. I've seen last place teams trade for guys in the final year of their contract, only to let them go at the end of the season.
