Trying to find?

World in Flames is the computer version of Australian Design Group classic board game. World In Flames is a highly detailed game covering the both Europe and Pacific Theaters of Operations during World War II. If you want grand strategy this game is for you.

That web site you came accross was taken down a couple of years ago... About the time Matrix took over the project.

Perhaps we will see something soon.

Jim

P.S. Soon is relative, how long did ADG work on in?

Well it was a single person working on CWiF (Chris Marinacci (yes there were also quite a bunch of testers and people looking over the rules on the mailing list)). While Matrix is also employing only a single programmer (Steve) I do believe there is much more momentum behind the project right now.

So I'm quite confident MWiF won't be far behind schedule if at all, particularly as Steve can base much of his work on Chris' programming.

I still dont understand why it has been taken down.

I was going to try it out to get what might have been even a small inkling to how the game played out.

Wodin,

I am doing a massive rewrite of the code that was used for CWIF (computer WIF - though I think of it as Chris' WIF).

That code was started in 1996 and was based on the limitations of the hardware and operating systems then in use. Its core design is 10 years out of date.

Chris never completed the program though he did get "hot seat" play to work for 3 scenarios, and most of the optional rules (60+ out of the 76 I currently have listed for MWIF). He also made a lot of changes in the code toward enabling Internet play, though that was never completed.

There are legal details (which I do not know, and I do not want to know) concerning Matrix' arrangement with ADG (Australian Design Group) relating to the availability of CWIF.

From my perspective, I am fully engaged in making MWIF a reality. CWIF is history, or, in the parlance of computers, legacy code - with all the different associations that phrase conjures up in the minds of people familiar with programming being applicable.

Having CWIF out in the public domain, being played and discussed, confuses things in regard to MWIF. Particularly in the minds of potential buyers of MWIF. That is something everyone associated with MWIF does not want to have happen.

So, CWIF is not available. With a little luck, and a little pluck, I hope to provide you with MWIF within the next 9 months, which will be vastly superior (PBEM, solitaire, multiplayer Internet).

This timeline is what I was talking about. I never really apreciated how old CWiF was. Starting it tenth year now. That so much was done on it is amazing considering I think WiF changed twice during that time and all the optional rules. To me the death of CWiF was the changes to WiF, being a programmer you ask for a "specification" and the insist that specification does not change. The optional rules add to the complexity as well.

I would be very pleased to see MWiF by the end of the year! I know and understand that a lot has gone into the game before and after Matrix took it over, but my experience with CWiF was that there was a way to go. To me the good news is the amount of work going into the maps which are artistic in nature and not "hard code".

CWiF needs to be "legacy code" and if MWiF is out before the end of the year, my hats are off to everyone involved because they are doing somthing I will never be able to do.

Keep it up, I was waiting!!!

I am beginning my 8th month working on MWIF. I started with Chris' code and little else.

Thanks.

My wife talks about her job as being the equivalent of moving a mountain using a teaspoon (one of those small, white, plastic ones).

I sometimes feel the same way. But a 10,000 piece jigsaw puzzle is put together one piece at a time. Of course, that is easier to do.
