Comment regarding my new map version

Post by Andrew Brown »

The latest version (version 5) of my WitP map has been completed, and it has been sent to a few generous people (Spooky, rogueusmc, AlaskanWarrior) who have agreed to host it again.

However, due to my being held up by several CHS issues I have not had the time to complete the scenario conversions, or my map web page. They will be done soon however (in the next few days, hopefully) and when they are ready I will be updating my website and making an announcement here.

In the meantime, the map can be downloaded and used with currently running games. The new bases that I am adding, and are named on the new map will not be present in currently running games, however. They will only be available when you start a new, converted, scenario. The converted scenarios will be available for download from my website once they are ready, as usual.

My apologies for the delays.

Thank you very much, Andrew. And absolutely no apologies needed.

Whoooohoooo! Downloading now! Can't wait to see this puppy! Thanks AB, you are one of the hardcores around here.[&o] Without the extended map I don't think I could play this game as it keeps Japan from gaming the limited stock map area, despite all the silliness the Japanese player can pull. Society Islands, Panama and Middle East are just too far for even the most gamey of player behavior.[:D]

Andrew, I plan to dl the map in the morning at work (DSL there as opposed to my dialup at home). My question is: what bases were added? Are there any added bases (or relocated) in the major campaign areas? I hope to use this map in my ongoing CHS v1.06, and am wondering what effect that using it might have. In my previous game the Japanese forces halted (six months in this location!) at the relocated spot for Akyab, even though my forces were in Akyab as it was presented on the map.

In my previous game the Japanese forces halted (six months in this location!) at the relocated spot for Akyab, even though my forces were in Akyab as it was presented on the map.

No bases have been moved (this time). From memory, the new bases added are:
  • Wau (next to Lae)
  • Tennant Creek (between Alice Springs and Daly Waters)
  • Kalgoorlie (between Perth and Adelaide)
  • Albury (between Melbourne and Sydney - represents Tocumwal airfields)
  • Gisborne (NZ North Island)
  • Picton (NZ South Island)
  • CHS will have a new Japanese base on Hokkaido, but I am not sure if I will also add it to the stock scenario conversions.

So none in the main campaign areas - there are enough there already. I added a few to NZ and Australia since there is the possibility of land campaigns in those areas.

The other base change is that Nanking is now a port, accessible by sailing up the Yangtse River (for ongoing games this base will remain an airfield). As there are no movements of bases to different hexes ongoing games should be OK.

Will you post the changes (full details of the changes) so those of us with Mods for earlier versions can update our files without having to redo the whole thing

Thanks

maybe its just me, but isn't the font a bit to grey? especially for the city names, but it seems like the same for all the names really. you have to really look for the name of the seas, since they blend in so much or perhaps this was intentional?

I made the base fonts dimmer, becuase when they were pure white they stood out too much in relation to the rest of the map. Also the sea names are faint intentionally, so as not to interfere with TF icons.

One thing I have learned is that you can't please everyone, no matter what adjustments you make. On that topic - I do plan to release this version of the map in the old map style as well, but it will be a while longer before I get around to that.

OK, I think I am right, but I want to confirm. I am playing a PBEM using the version 4 map. I believe I can update the map to version 5 but there will not be any new bases? The map looks much better and the old one was good.

Correct.

I guess I should remind people that this question is covered in the FAQ that I include with the map documentation.
