At the Battle of Chancellorsville, on the evening following his successful flanking attack against the Union forces under Hooker on May 2nd, 1863, Jackson was shot by his own troops. He and his staff had been scouting Union positions and as they were returning, Confederate pickets took them for a Union Cavalry charge in the darkness and unleashed a volley of rifle fire. Jackson was wounded by two rifle balls in the left arm and shoulder and also received a 3rd hit in the hand. He survived temporarily and his wife was rushed to his side to nurse him, but he developed an infection (pneumonia and pleuresy and died on Sunday, May 10th, 1863.

I made my 8th graders watch "God's and Generals" and kept them in suspense waiting to see when and how Jackson would die. It actually kept their attention through the slow spots in the movie. That was one question they all got right on the chapter test too! I had similar results with "Gettysburg" as I got them primed for the big charge (and the massive cannon bombardment).

Speaking of movies, I wanted to show my 7th graders "Jefferson in Paris" but after previewing it, decided it was a bit too much for 12 year olds (even if they do all know the Sally Hemmings story and the DNA testing that proved that the Jefferson family tree had a black branch). Jefferson was quite the H***y little rascal [:D]

That's great that you could get them to watch 'Gettysburg.' It's one of my favorites - I always wondered how it would sit with school-age kids to watch in History class. What I want to know, though, is since the movie is something like four hours long, did it take a week to show it?

My wife is an assistant principal, and judging from her stories, I wonder if the administration would have the patience for that. :) Otherwise, I think it's fantastic that they show an interest in that film.

Yep, it took over 4 class periods, but was worth it. I was talking and explaining throughout the movie. It gave them a great grasp of what the Civil War was really like.

I'll be showing "All Quiet on the Western Front" once we hit WWI in a couple of weeks.

I'm looking forward to getting to WWII with them. We'll try and get some of the veteran Navajo "Code talkers" to come in and talk with the kids about the war. We've got a few survivors around the reservation.

BTW... out here the Navajo LOVE "Windtalkers" despite the bad ratings in the Matrix Forum where it is often nominated for "worst movie of all time".

As to the administration... I haven't had the principal in my class once this year for longer than 3 minutes. I do what I like (except with the @#$%^& administrative password on the computers that won't let me install anything!} Wait till I get through my probabtionary year... then I'm going to start a revolution out here!
