Österreich Über Alles: An Austrian CoG AAR
Part I: End of a Dynasty

Emperor Francis II, Austria

The Imperial Palace, Vienna

In a well lit sitting room deep within the recesses of the Austrian Imperial Palace a cadre of heavily adorned Field Marshals pored over maps of the western portion of Austrian known as Styria, compared them with the latest intelligence reports from their roving scouts and silently came to identical conclusions: The armies of the newly minted French Republic would be met on their homeland. The war with the upstart republicans of France had continued for six months now with no real victor, despite several victories by Austrian forces. The French had massed in Switzerland and, should they advance as their scouts reported was their intention, a climactic battle would be held in the region. The Field Marshals shared decades of military experience, and pored over the map with a unifying question: Where to meet the revolutionary horde? A finger shot out from the youngest, the Archduke Charles, and selected a point on the map, Austerlitz.

The rest is, as they say, history. Austria concluded the Treaties of Vienna and Kiev, which allied Britain with Austria and pledged neutrality to the Russians in regard to their ongoing feud with Sweden. In return Austria recieved sorely needed commerce and gold. France capitulated only 6 months later, thus ending the War of the First Coalition. During this time, however, France had coerced a greedy Russia and a complacent Sweden to enter the war against Austria, beginning the Russo-Austria conflict of 1793. Clouds gathered over the eastern borders of Austria as the Russians prepared to invade a weakened Austria... Will Britain and Prussia stand beside their recent ally?

Part II: The Tide Turns

The Archduke Charles

Krakow, Poland

The Army of the Bavaria triumphantly strode through the shattered city of Krakow led by their beloved commander, the Archduke Charles. As column upon column of adorned cavalrymen and musketeers marched through the city they could not help but notice the dark, defeated expressions upon the faces of the citizens who only months earlier had joyously filled the streets after entering the war against Austria. Now, only despair remained with the widows and orphans created by the 5 day battle of Krakow. The King of Poland had promptly abdicated and fled the capital, fearing Austrian reprisals for defying the Austrian Emperor. A few bloodied corpses still lay in the streets, stragglers who had escaped the terrible battle in surrounding hillsides only to die a pauper's death in the cobbled streets. Sweden, too, had capitulated after receiving the news that their army had been destroyed just 2 miles south of Krakow. The Austrian prisoner train stretched far behind the victorious Austrian procession, its members counting the days before parole would lead them home.

The Archduke shielded his eyes for a moment as he spotted an approaching horsemen riding at full gallop down Krakow's main causeway, heading straight for them. His bImperial Guard immediately drew sabers, but the Archduke gave them a menacing glance, "It is a messenger, 'order arms' gentlemen."

The rider reined in his horse and leapt off the saddle to proffer the expected formalities of addressing the Duke of Teschen. "Your Excellency, Field Marshall Blucher sends his regards, and wishes to inform Your Excellency that they have defeated Suvorov and broken the siege of Berlin!" The Archduke could only smile, his two pronged attack had returned Sweden to dormancy and halted the Russians at the gates of Berlin. Now the combined forces of Austria and Prussia could set their sights on the last remaining prize: Moscow.

Part III:Final Victory

Deposition of the Robe Church, The Kremlin

Deposition of the Robe Church, Moscow

The silence inside the church was appropriate, thought the Archduke Charles, it contrasted well with terrible din of combat that had rocked the city over the past week. Not that the Russians had much choice in the matter, the church bells had been melted down to make cannon. There was metaphor here, thought the Archduke, we make war in the noise and dirt and peace in a silent church. The crucified Lord looked down upon him from the wonderly marbled architecture, but the Archduke could not bear his gaze. My soul will have to wait, he thought, but at least now the killing has stopped.

The Campaign of the Archduke 1793-6 resulted in the capitulation of three major monarchies and a republic, a feat few have matched. He was a whirlwind upon the Continent, fighting set piece matches against the best Poland, France, Sweden and Russia had to offer and besting them all. The famed Relief of Berlin, a huge gamble for the Austrians as they split their army, paid huge dividends in the end, as the two wings of the army advanced on Moscow and after a long siege and 2 major battles, finally succeeded in defeating the last member of the then defunct French Coalition. Poland was paritioned between Prussia and Austria and remained that way until the wars of German unification in the 19th Century. Despite Austria's dominance at the close of the 18th Century, her cultural diversity ultimately tore her apart at the seams in the 19th Century. The wars of German Unification with Prussia and the failed campaign against the Turkish Empire in 1848 set the stage for the Great War of 1914. Facing uncontrollable internal strife and defeat at the hands of the Triple Entente, the final Hapsburg monarch abdicated the throne, ending the Austrian-Hungarian dynasty.
