A Blast From the Past!

Post by Marauders »

Now that Maximum Football is going to be released, I thought it may be nice to post a couple of questions and answers from an old Catch the Fever interview that David did long ago.
CTF: Old School FBPro Player? I know you caught quite a following after Sierra stopped making it. What did you think of the Series?

I liked the series. It was more of a football fans game than an arcade fans
game. I've always been more into the strategy of PC football than the thumb
twitching part of it. But then, I suck at Pac-Man to.

I can't say I was completely sorry to see them go. A huge following of their
game switched to mine as the CFL game offered the closest thing to the
Sierra product.

FBPro was great. It is too bad FBPro 2000 was never finished. It has been a long wait for Maximum Football to put a simulation back on the shelves.
CTF: Back to that FBPro thing, see I'm slick. You holding the next version up there? I mean this new open source, 3d modeled Canadian game can easily be made into an un-licensed NFL game. You working on that?

No. As the core game's source code is not available, you can't change the
rules. You will have 3 downs, 20 seconds, 12 players per side, unlimited
back field motion, a real size of field, and yes, long before the XFL, there
are no fair catches.

You can create whatever teams, leagues, and players you want but you play
Canadian rules.

Besides, it is simply not as easy as changing the MaxDowns variable from 3
to 4 in the source code. The Canadian game is far more different than just 3
downs. A completely new game engine would need to be created for US
football. That is why I built the '99 version from scratch rather than
buying US style game code.

Did anyone see the light bulb turn on with that answer? Times change, and that is a good thing.

Building an engine that could run Canadian, United States, and indoor rules was obviously a large undertaking. In the old forums, David talked about having to ditch so much of the code from the CFL'99 game, because it just would not work for the Maximum Football project.
