Question about AV and AVDs

After reading I was wondering do they only function as part of a base or can aircraft be launched from them at sea ?

Ask because I see several Japansese AVs loaded at the start with planes such as the Chitose and Chiyoda.

Wanted to put my Floatplanes on ASW patrol and use the AVs as floating ASW platforms but if they cant launch at sea wont be much use.

I only used them at a base. Never heard of being able to use as a launching platform. Unsure though.

I believe the CS class of ship (Chitose, Nisshin and another) can and do launch their seaplanes while at sea. Both sides AVs and USN AVDs must be anchored at a possible port (a dot hex will do but some supplies need to be there too) to support seaplane operations.

Yup. They all have organic air groups of varying sizes, most with 4 (or 8) Jakes and 8 (or 4) Petes. These are all usable at sea.

The ones you make by converting AKs however, can support only one organic aircraft (not included with the conversion; you have to rob a cruiser or a sub). They can still support +10 in a base/dot hex though....

Hey, Rufes aren't that bad. I had one shoot down a B-17E over the weekend.[:D]

Allied AV and AVD are tenders. That is they really did not have the capability to launch and recover aircraft themselves but were used to support seaplanes by providing fuel, supplies, parts and service personel.

The Japanese CS class were actually designed as sort of a scout carrier. The were intended to operate at sea as advance scouts for the main force and could launch and retrieve planes. They were eventally converted to light carriers. Not really sure about the Japanese AVs but I am assuming that they had some capibilty to launch seaplanes at sea as well. I assume Japanese CS and AVs were used as tenders as well as they can provide support for large seaplanes at a base.

If I recall, the Japanese used the Chitose as a fast transport once or twice.
