OOB - 25 Range for Offboard Artillery ????

Post by RichardTheFirst »

Can somebody explain me (like I'm a 4 years old) why do I need offboard artillery with only 25 hexes range? To smoke my onboard artillery? To bombard infiltraters?

I'm talking about the Japanese 75mm Mtn Bty. Bought that in a PBEM (without looking at the range) because it was the only 75mmm available.

Now I'm stuck with it.... <img src="mad.gif" border="0"> <img src="mad.gif" border="0">

Went as far as page 3 before I give up. Not easy when you don't know the name of the thread, don't have the search engine and my connection being slow today.

Thanks anyway Federico.

Remember the 75mm was not made to fire off board, it was made by the real Japanese to kill with. The game has to fit this real world weapon, with a real short range, into its game engine. Sometimes its just not a good fit.

In that case it should be onboard. The Mtn stands for what? Mountain?

I'll have to investigate this further when the Japanese v7.1 OOB reaches the 'final release candidate stage'. Probably going to be a tough nut to address unfortunately - we *cannot* remove a unit from the OOB due to backwards compatibility issues. I'm not sure if we even dare change its classification too much. These two factors make this a difficult problem to solve.

At first glance I think maybe the best solution we can do is to modify the name to indicate that it has a short range. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Brian

The last time I looked there were more than just the mtn 75 to watch for. Especially on very large maps. There were several pieces that had perhaps a range of 100(+-). On a 240 hex map, guess what?

I don't see the problem so long as players check what they are purchasing. It is a rude awakening the first time around, however! ;-) Sort of like purchasing a unit that does not have transport, etc.

I no longer buy 75mm for offboard period. Wwhen I do buy it for onboard, I make sure I have transport for it.

In order to accidently buy the 75mm guns, one has to be ABLE to buy them. I see several workarounds:

1. Change availability to dec1949-49. Easy and painless, since the units still be in the scenarios they should.

Make the unit Formation in which the 75's appear, unavailable. I don't have so much experience with editing OOB's myself, so I'm nto sure et would be possible to do this without making other arty units unavailable - but otherwise it'll be easy and painless, too.

These were my several two suggestions.

Paul said it will be eliminated in 7.1. I'm happy <img src="smile.gif" border="0"> .
