need rule clarification or bug fix on CAG counterattack

Post by WanderingHead »

According to the rules, after CVs "in a sea region attack an adjacent sea region with carrier fleet based airgroups, after their attack is resolved any remaining carrier airgroups in the attacked sea region will automatically immediately counter attack ... "

I just did this, and every air unit in the attacked sea region counter attacked, not just the CAGs. There were a number of air units on CAP from adjacent land. This does not jive with the written rules.

It seems that the CAP planes should not counter attack, because they usually don't. I can only imagine that survival of at least one defending CAG will somehow allow all the other units to behave as they normally won't ... ?

Something is indeed wrong.

I am not certain what the best approach is though. Having only the CAGs perform the CS seems too prone to trap setting so its something that needs carefull consideration.

It is perhaps more than 2by3 wants to implement at this stage, but my suggestion is that in order to keep the rules consistent only CAGs do the counterstrike. However, let them use the combat analyzer and only do the strike if the analyzer indicates that the counterstrike will likely generate more hits to the enemy than to themselves.

Using the combat analyzer should avoid the possibility of a trap (e.g. many many fighters waiting for the counterstrike).

Honestly how often does this situation occur? I cant imagine very often at all. I play Japan the vast majority of my games and I can say I've never encountered this.

I say leave it as is. If someone actually wants to make use of the islands to stage land based air and use them to create powerful anti carrier forces I say let 'em. At the very least it means someone is actually USING the islands rather than ignoring them in the game. And other than the islands, how often is this going to occur?

I'd put this one down as not worth the bother. Its probably better just to update the rules on the counter-attacks instead.

Just my %.02. :)

I'm with Uncle Joe in allowing the game to stand as is. Nothing wrong with encouraging the use of land based air to support your carriers, and it's not like this situation is going to come up too often. Unless I hear something else that makes me want to change my mind, I say let's treat this as a feature and update the rules accordingly.
All understanding comes after the fact.

I also fully agree with Uncle Joe. It allows land based air to offer more support to the Navy and that's a good thing.
