No Fumbles: What was the design decision here?

Post by gambler »

Someone said that David Winter called the lack of fumbles a design decision and that he discussed it somewhere. I'm not asking David himself to reiterate this, I know he's busy, but could someone who read that discussion summarize his reasons? Coding problems, hates 'bad things happening to a team', etc?

I'm sorry, a lack of fumbles in a football game drops it from 'sim' level to 'fantasy' (I won't use the term arcade because it's definitely not that).

I think he said only that fumbles and interceptions are rare events.

There was no design decision to remove fumbles. What it looks like is that fumbles either became too rare or broke at some point in the last two weeks before release. It's on our list of gameplay issues to look at.

I don't recall David saying anything about eliminating fumbles from the game.

There are fumbles in the game. The problem was that fumbles would often be recovered by the player who fumbled the ball. I am sure that will be looked at in due time just as interceptions have been.

Sorry I think that was me.

I used my words poorly in attempting to explain what was said in another thread.I also wondered aloud why fumbles were made a rare event if the hands attribute was supposed to deal with them.

My bad.

Someone indcated on the board once that the Average Interception Percantage for All QB's was something like 3.5% and average Fumble occurance for all RB's was like 2.2-2.3%. I might have too look at NFL.com's website too see if these percentages figure out.
