how long does the minefield last

depends on where they a layed. From "lasting the longest" to "disappearing the fastest" it goes harbor --> coastal area --> shallow water --> open ocean
how do you reload your minelayers

need a lvl 9 port or a lvl 3 port with 20,000 supplies and a MLE
how many mle do you need to support your mlayers

only need one in a lvl 3 port or higher

A slight variation on the theme. I have been trying to lay a minefield at Pearl Harbor using the units homeported there. The stinking TF has been sitting in the hex for a week now and hasn't dropped a single one. I had no problem mining Midway, Johnston or Palmyra Islands. It just won't mine its own homeport. [&:]

No it only mines a destination. What you have to do is give it a destination of PH and a homeport of say La Haina. It will lay mines. You then just need to bring it back next turn.

How do you lay mines other than at a port? I have sent my MLs out with various configurations and they never drop their mines. I can mine ports fine, but not elsewhere. I'm trying to mine the Malacca strait (near Singapore). Playing Japan, ver 1.6, stock scen 15.

All you need is mines on board an ML or DML in minewarfare TF or a Subminelaying TF, set the destination to the desired hex and make sure that Retirement Allowed is set, not Patrol/do not retire.

That's the way it's intended. But, I have an MLE in a lvl 3 port with 12,000 supply and it's resupplying just fine. So the lower end is now in question .....

I think the minelayer TF has to be at mission speed too.
There are only two kinds of people that understand Marines: Marines and the enemy. Everyone else has a second-hand opinion.

Speed doesn't matter.

I constantly use cruise from Lahaina (home port) to PH.
When the TF lays mines at Pearl I replenish the TF there and set Pearl as it's destination.

It burns 1000 op points and sits there almost every time.
To rinse and repeat the next turn[:D]

The manual has this to say on the subject

Mine layers and submarines may rearm at any level 9 or 10 port with supplies or at any base with an MLE ship.

This suggests that the MLE will reload mines as long as the base supplies are not in the orange.

At least in stock 1.602, subs will only rearm with MLEs of their own country - i.e. - Dutch subs will not rearm with mines using US MLEs. Supposedly they've fixed this (several times they've said that now) with the 1.7x stuff.
