ADavidB V. Treespider...Tree's view

Post by treespider »

God how I hate first turns! Probably should have waited another day or two ...but things started running together and its a long war. If I missed something I'll try and make it up over the course of the next couple of weeks.

Here are are our settings...

Game is Stock, Scen 15

I am Japan
ADavidB is Allied

Realism:

Allied Sub Doc - "OFF"
Japanese Sub Doc - "OFF"
Fog of War - "ON"
Advanced Weather - "ON"
Allied Damage Control - "ON"
Historical First Turn - "OFF"
PDU - "OFF"
Variable Setup - "OFF"
December 7th Surprise - "ON"
Reinforcements - "Fixed"

Game Options:

TF Move Radius - "ON"

Accept Air & Ground Reinforcements - "OFF"
Turn Cycle - "1"

Preferences:

Mapstyle - "Hexes"

And our house rules....

Minimum bomber height 9000'
No massive PT boat assemblages
All aircraft at Pearl stood down except for one FG set at CAP 20
No sub invasions
No invasions at nonbase or non dot hexes

We'll try and keep it real....

ADavidB will be running his own AAR in which I will be persona non-grata....He never said I could not hire a spy...I can pay in beer[;)] Just kidding no spys.

December 9 - Another relatively quiet day. Japanese BB's appear at Naga and quickly dispatch three Allied cargo vessels before bombarding the base. Weather turns to crap across most of the Pacific. I get the feeling most of the Asiatic Fleet is on the verge of escaping...time will tell.

Post by treespider »

December 10 - Things get interesting today!

In a series of night actions PG Tulsa, DD John Ford and DD Pope are sunk. I-7 sinks MSW Outrade off the coast of Seattle before undergoing a vicious ASW attack which records 8 hits. Weather continues to be a factor in and around Luzon. PT-Boats also rear their ugly heads in a successful hit and run.

On the negative side...Carrier warfare is still in its infancy. The Japanese CVL TF failed to issue proper orders to its airgroups resulting in an unescorted strike being flown into Davao. 5 Vals are shot down. CA Myoko is hit with a torpedo off the coast of Mindanao. My late starting fast transport mission arrives at Makin and discharges its load to find the skys filled with American aircraft. Before the day is through several Japanese ships have been hit by the Americans.

Landings occur at Naga, Makin and continue at Kuching and Kota Bharu.

A major land battle has erupted in Central China at Changsha.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/11/41

Kind of tired right now. Suffered through my first two CTD's ever iirc....one during the combat replay and one while issuing orders. The second was a biotch as i forgot the first maxim of WitP - SAVE EARLY and SAVE OFTEN!!!

Let's see...The American TF (presumably a CV) at Makin has once again vanished. IJ subs are out in force hunting the American. I thought about trying to give chase with KB but I've decided against it and will most likely retire to Truk or Kwajalein.

I haven't devoted much time or thought to this region of the Map (South/Central Pacific) as of yet...as I'm not planning on an auto-victory just a fun competitive game.

I guess I could go ahead discuss what I want to accomplish...

In the Northern Phillipines I've come with a very large force and it will grow larger still.

A little further south I am currently planning on isolating Mindanao and driving into the Eastern DEI. I am going to try and take Menando, Amboina, Kendari and Koepang in succession and hopefully before timor becomes a fortress. I've devoted a fair amount of forces for this and plan on kicking things off in the next couple of weeks.

On Borneo I've occupied Kuching and rapidly transformed the airfield into a major naval air station. I plan on taking Sinkawang hopefully in the next day or two as well.

In Malaya...I'm concerned about my progress at Khota Bharu. Hopefully the base there will fall in the next day or three. I won't really kick off my offensive until the transports completely unload at Songkhia which should coincide with the arrival of the Imperial Guards and supporting units.

In China...I would like to take Changsha first and am trying to reposition myself to achieve this...After Changsha I need to decide whether to push on Chungking through Ichnag or try and occupy the southern airfields.

All in all the game will probably progress fairly historically unless I fall victim to the victory disease.

So back to the situation at hand...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/12/41

Kind of busy at the moment planning the final locations for my base forces.

Needless to say things turned ugly for the Asiatic fleet today. Only real drawback for the Japanese was I-2 taking a pounding near Pearl Harbor, the sinking of an empty AP and the failure of the airdrop on Sinkawang to take the base.

Weather again played a role. I had spotted a small TF of warships at Menando and sent Baby KB to dispatch of them in preparation for my impending landing. Unfortunately the my planes were unable to find their targets.

POW and Repulse have seemingly vanished.

Slow but steady progress in ground combat at Hong Kong and Khota Bharu. Lamon bay captured.

In Northern Luzon I have apparently trapped the units retreating from Tug. A pitiful shock attack was launched by the Americans against my crack paratroopers. Reinforcements are on the way. I have no intenetion of crossing the river into Clark directly from Lingayen. San Marcelino has been vacated and I will probably occupy the airfield there in the next day or two.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/13/41

Although the round-up of the Allied Asiatic fleet appears to be going nicely IHQ is concerned about the progress of the various ground objectives.

In Malaya..
Kota Bharu has yet to be taken...I landed the 18th Division per the pre-installed orders and di not reinforce it with additional troops. I was hoping it would be able to acccomplish the mission by itself. I've already sent my turn off and if it does not fall this turn I plan on throwing a massive air ground attack against the allied units there. In addition I've loaded an HQ and am sending it to Kota as well. Hopefully in the next day or two it will fall.

Another TF is heading for Kuantan carrying the fully prepped 56th Division. It should make land fall within the next few days.

The battle for Alor Star will also begin shortly. The 5th division has finally fully formed at Songhkia and has been joined by elements of the Imperial Gds Division.

In China...

I suffered a bad bloody nose at Changsha and hong Kong continues to resist.

At sea...

The good luck I had last turned was tempered by events today. A DD hit a mine in Cam Ranh Bay. Another empty troop transport is torpedoed. As well as BB Kongo although the damage was minimal it still will need to return to port at some point. The delay at Kota Bharu is partly responsible for this.

In the Phillipines I continue to gather my strength.

I think I'm going to start editing down the combat reports to keep things shoreter...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/14/41

The dykes start to crack...

In Malaya -

Kota Bharu has finally fallen to the 18th Div. The Japanese 5th Division has moved on Alor Star. The Japanese 56th Division will be landing on Kuantan tomorrow. Time to start shutting down Singapore's airspace.

Eastern DEI-

The campaign against the Asiatc Fleet has progressed nicely. ADavidB lumped his units into several largish TF's which has simplified the task of boxing them in. In a previous PBEM I participated in with Jim Burns, Jim seperated all of the units into one ship TF's.

Japanese units will be assaulting Menando today in preparation for the move against Amboina in the next week or two. My surface units are currently regrouping at Palau. Baby KB will continue to cover the Menando landing enroute back to Palau.

In the Phillipines-

In Nortern Luzon - Appari and Tug. have been occupied by the Japanese. On the road from Tug to Clark 4 Allied units are engaged by 2 Japanese paratroop units supported by Japanese Armor. Elsewhere the build up continues. San Marcelino was taken by Japanese Paratroopers. These guys will need a much needed rest as I've kept them very active in the first week. Too bad I only have one Tina Group. In Southern Luzon - the 16th Division which landed on Naga, accompanied by the Kure group which landed at Legaspi are assaulting the Allied units at Naga. The reinforced paratroop company which took Lamon Bay is currently marching to the Naga-Manilla road. Hopefully they will arrive in time to cut the road before the units in naga can escape to Manilla. my plan is to bring the 21st and 38th Divisions into Southern Luzon while conducting a holding operation at San Marcelino-Lingayen with the 48th Div and 65th Brigade supported by tanks. Hopefully ADavidb will keep a fair amount of units at Clark while I invest Manilla from the south.

In the South Pacific-

Glens spotted the American CV TF NE of Espirtu Santo heading west. Me thinks he is heading either to AUs or Noumea. Hopefully I will be able to shadow him. I have a CS enroute to pick up coverage.

In China-

I plan on holding at Changsha. Hong Kong is about to fall, my orginal intent on attacking was, as in history, to create a diversion and draw the Chinese to Changsha from Canton. This move was apparently successful as ADavidB only left a two unit screen NW of Canton. ADavidB mysteriously removed the unit blocking the river north of Chnagsha allowing me to cross. I am now one hex from the Changsha-Chungking Road.

In Alaska -

Japanese dive-bombers found BB Colorado sitting in port at Anchorage and hit her 5 times. How long do I press my luck up here? Is it easy to sink a BB sitting in port? I've decide to hang around for one more day before departing.

I said "holding at" and not "holding". With the supply the way it is in Stock by just being at Changsha you deny the Chinese a bunch of supply.

The American surprise attack continues.... 2 torpedos are put into BB Yamashiro...hopefully she'll make it back to port. So much for the quick investment of Rabaul. I really stubbed my toe here. I forgot to return my Mavis' to Truk and was essentially driving blind into Rabaul. I also forgot to base Zero's at Truk...as a result my Nell's wouldn't fly unescorted against the American CV. Hopefully the damge exacted by ADavidB won't be too bad here. Time will tell. KB is still too far away to participate...perhaps if ADavidB lingers for a while I might be able to catch a US CV.

Shame on you for not having search assets and Zeros at Truk. I burned Amiral Laurent with a CV raid on Truk as he did the same thing (sank a CS, a CA, 2 DDs and damaged some others).

If you have major ops in the AO, at least put the Nells on Naval search.
