Where's the pitchout?

Post by throttle8 »

While playing the game I have noticed that the option for selecting a pitchout does not exsist. They offer a pitch around but no pitchout. Any idea why this is? A good example of this is when the other team has a speedster on base. Everyone "knows" he is going to steal. So, why not gamble and do a pitchout to try and catch the runner red handed? The pros do it all the time.

I agree throttle8. It sounds like a minor thing, but there is no way of holding a speedster out of scoring position when there is no such thing as a pitchout.
Even the old board games had a pitchout. Unless your catcher hasa 120mm cannon for an arm, you won't throw these guys out.

I'm not sure that pitchouts would work very well unless the game simulated every pitch to the person managing the game. The game seems to randomly select the count that the batter steals on so the runner might be stealing on a 3-2 count rather than a count that a pitchout would work with.

jono's got the right of it.

The game does simulate every pitch, under the hood. However, it doesn't present that to the user. It could... and I think it has to IF its going to satisfy the 'in-game management' crowd. That would be a pre-req for a pitch-out option (I'd think).

I have good news. The ability to call a Pitch Out will be included in the upcoming PureSim 2006. I just released that feature to Beta testers today.

Now given that the game does not play out pitch by pitch, here's how it works...

Basically, you call for a pitch out and if there is an appropriate count the pitcher will try it -- if the runner was going on that pitch you have a very high chance of nailing him. You also slightly increase the chance of a walk. The AI will call for them too!

Great. This is a feature I was angling for, too. Thanks, Shaun.

That is great Shaun. Were you able to fix the bug where a runner would try to steal on one count and then the next pitch would have a different count? I still see that with the latest version of 2005.
