The RHS Philosophy

By Sid Trevethan (coordinator)

RHS was born of CHS and is similar in fundamental concept: both are creatures of the Matrix Games War In The Pacific Forum, both seek to improve the game in a historical and recreational sense, and both permit people in the Forum to join. However,
CHS was originally a very specific group of people, and those who seek to contribute must win their approval for changes. Further, that group has a principle (which has considerable merit) of promoting “stability” – which is interpreted not to involve rapid changes in scenarios – even where known errors are identified.

RHS is a much more dynamic and open project. First of all, it is intended there should be a number of scenarios, so something not appropriate for one may be for another. Second, true data errors are the real enemy of good software – so any obviously wrong data will be immediately corrected. Third, while CHS principles of data verification are identical, there is no elaborate “validation” process. The RHS coordinator does the validation – usually in minutes – and issues revisions – usually in a day. IF something is not suitable for use by RHS, and a player still wants it in a variant of RHS, but does not know how to use the editor, a custom scenario with that something will be issued, in the same time frame.

RHS has evolved a set of working principles which include:

1) We will always respect the proprietary rights of Matrix Games, Inc.
2) We will always consider any suggestion.
3) We will correct data errors on a continuous basis, as they are identified.
4) We will share our data even before release with the CHS coordinator.
5) Whenever possible, we will share “slots” with the current WITP version.
6) Within the bounds of (5) above, we will share “slots” with the primary
CHS release.
7) A disagreement about some bit of data or history will never be taken
as a personal affront. We will always be respectful, on principle.
