Any tips for newcomers

Post by Aensland »

Hello folks,

Got this as a gift from a friend - awesome game!

I'm finding that it's extremely difficult though :) My Titans seem to trip all over themselves any time the terrain is even remotely wooded or water. Is there no "practice mode" where you don't die permanently but also don't earn experience? That would really help. It's getting a bit ridiculous having to "trial-and-error" my way while sacrificing Jocks needlessly... that seems wrong.

Are there any recommendations on what starting attributes and skills a Jock should have?

Running through water or swamp is always a gamble, so walk. There really isn't a practice mode, but you can of course create a temporary squad (that you hopefully won't become attached to) or just play a few random skirmishes, until you get the hang of it. Also, there's an unofficial guide, located in one of the sticky threads in the main forum.

When creating your jock, keep in mind which titan you want to outfit, and then develop the appropriate skills for that titan. There really isn't any single path to follow, because it all depends on how you play and which titans you play with. But if, for example, you're playing with recon and light titans, make sure to boost those particular handling skills (it'll help with the falls).

Thanks.

It took a bit of fiddling before I realised I could change the tonnage of the enemy. 3 of my puny 40 ton Titans against a 60 ton one. It was quite hilarious the way the Titans would keep getting knocked off their feet. Increasing the Piloting skills did help, although I now avoid heavy woods and water when possible. At least until my jocks' skills get better. The experience gains weren't much, but I think it's worth the wait.

Edit: The guides were very useful indeed... although quite technically oriented, more than I can digest in one go [:)] Once I can use (and can afford to use) Light Titans, it isn't too bad. Most matches are still up-and-close slugfests though. Guided Missile skill is rather useless at low levels, fortunately I make my Jocks specialise in 2 weapon types. Unfortunately, nobody has close combat.

CC seems very useful, a Titan with dual Vibro Saws or something chopped my Leader's Titan up to bits (luckily managed to eject). My 4th recruit - when I can afford one - will be a CC guy. Also, luckily, reward money is fairly abundant, so cautious players like myself can crawl up the ranks with easy fights instead of having to hope for luck in massive free-for-alls [:)]
