Tokyo Wars! Jeffs (a) vs Senkatana (j) - Nik Mod 5.02
I wanted to do a Nik mod to ensure at least that someone (Nik) would read this.[:D]
It is called Tokyo wars as both me and my worthy opponent live there. [8D]
But as it is the campaign game, it will be quite a while before I can blow my
house up[&:].
Anyway the basics...I have only light WITP experience..I played one month of Nik mod before. Very little time playing the AI...But I do have extensive UV experience. So I am in the semi-noob, total boob mode.[&o]
My opponent has played against the IA for the last 2 1/2 years. He does not have PBEM experience...Also, he does not read much English (we e-mail back in Japanese) so I at least have the potential advantage of looking over the forum in search of the clue I do not have.
We started off historical, not much on the house rules...
Basics
PDU on, but no 2E into 4E (bummer)
The KB can not refuel and hangout off of Pearl without going back to at least the Marshalls...
ASW 8 ship max
Russia war needs 2 week warning
No sub invasions.
and a couple of others...But overall, rather light in the rule department.

RE: Tokyo Wars! Jeffs (a) vs Senkatana (j) - Nik Mod 5.02
Basic strategy (at least for this sad excuse for allied leadership).
It should be noted I know very little about senkatana. So I have no idea if he is hyperaggressive or a methodical attacker. But he might not be ready for what
a human will do vs what the AI will do.
Pretty much the basics....Though maybe not as conservative as some...As we are playing with the historical start, it feels bogus to run everything as far away as possible....Obviously I am in react mode but the basics are.
1. Build up the islands from PH to Nomeau. So Canton, Suva Suva, Johnson...
Yeah, he can take them from me...But I will make him take some time to do it. That and cover it with the KB...
2. I believe in counterattacking where the KB is not (or at least defending where the KB is not). By forcing a couple of smart battles early (even if odds are only even) it forces the Japanese player to recognize that a half baked attempt to take land will be slapped, and badly. [:-]Of course a well coordinated attack in force is impossible to stop for the first months. [X(]But that is fine. I just do not like giving away freebies to empire. Fight for it. Then again, if he puts all of his cards in order in a particular theatre..Run like hell! But I think psychologically that if the IJN has a couple of bloody (where they bleed as well) fights in the first month, they will be perhaps a little more circumspect...
I think with ahistorical opens this might be easier said than done. But with the historical start, I want him to pay for the DEI and such...
That said, I probably will tend to be free moving surface units than CVs....Unless I see the KB somewhere, I am fairly loath to send out the CVs until I have F4Fs and avengers.... I would rather lose force z than one US CV...Which probably means force is gone within a month. (the first turn it is off to Batavia).
I will be fairly standard in that I will be getting out base/engineering units from the SRA. I want the infantry to go down fighting for the most part..Of course I will try to save bits and pieces...As US subs suck(ok, good subs, bad torpedoes), I probably will use fleet boats for the first 3-4 months to save units/lay mines. 0-19 and 20 will be used purely for mine laying and so will argonaut (no upgrade there).
From PI, I will try to get the combat engineers and the Seabee like unit out the first week. That and a bunch of airfields as I get PPs.
For PI, everybody runs to Clark.
For Malaya, a fighting retreat.
For Burma, Rangoon will be almost totally abandonded with Ayk-Mandalay-Myn as the first line of defense. Then I will try to set up defenses against amphibious assault...
As for China....Well there was just a great thread there..I will reread and utilize...

RE: Tokyo Wars! Jeffs (a) vs Senkatana (j) - Nik Mod 5.02
First turn as pretty standard. I lose 225 planes, he loses 25..
No BBs sunk, but 3 have sys damage around 80.(flot around 50)...Well no shock there...
Weirdest part was he sunk 2 PTs at PH.
Wake falls[X(]
So a pretty standard turn 1.

LOL 2 PT's .. hardly a japanese coup there [;)]. although sometimes there as danagerous as BB's .
and its not just Nik .. mee tooooo ..... good luck !
I do admire a fighting defence way more fun for both players.
If you don't mind me asking are you japanese in ancestry as well as your opponent ? This is my 1st inkling than any non-eupoean based players ( inc USA and Australiaa/NZ as colonies[;)] ) play the game .. [:D] great

RE: Tokyo Wars! Jeffs (a) vs Senkatana (j) - Nik Mod 5.02
I am American, but have been in Tokyo too long[:-]
My opponent is Japanese.
I have seen in stores a Japanese strategic level pacific war game, but had 0 interest in trying to figure out the rules.[&o] I can read Japanese, but after a few pages I lose focus.[8|] Anyway, there are about 3-4 sites in Japan that focus on WITP.
But it took about a week to recruit a player. My guess is many of them play IA as the language barrier gets in the way.
As for a fighting defence, I kind of feel that in a historical game, one has an obligation to not run....It just leads to a better game..
If one has open ended initial Japanese attacks, then a more conservative opening might be called for. Also, as it is a Nik mod, the IJA can not just blitzkreig China with ease (not saying they can not win a land war there, just that they will have to work hard for it. And the actual probability of winning goes down as well...)...
In my first game, my opponent handled the initial DEI attack with less than stellar coordination. He bombarded Jahore a couple of times. Then just after new year he did it again (he hardly bombed singapore). So I rested my vildas and swordfish and also flew in Tiva and beaforts...then attacked..He lost 1 BB, 1 CA and 1 DD.....
I think that as the allies in the beginning, one must (at least in a historical game) force the IJN to be honest, ie put down the forces needed to win a base. Just giving away territory just leads him to take more...And out in the pacific, a string of islands with a division defending and level 9 forts is a nightmare to have to take back...
But I will be a wimp on CV battle until 4F-4s and avengers....

RE: Tokyo Wars! Jeffs (a) vs Senkatana (j) - Nik Mod 5.02
Well this game has an additional historical edge now the commanders are the correct nationality [;)].
Yes , avoiding KB is a good idea .. but it cant be everywhere .. thats where the fun starts.

Hi Jeff,
I'm a fighting defence kind of guy, too. I'd add to what Rob said - avoid KB, but don't be afraid to (very carefully) show your CVs. A successful CV raid or two against your opponent's shipping can slow him down a lot as he covers his offensives more carefully. And bag some shipping and/or warships.
Anyway, good luck.

ROb- Agreed, nice historical feel!
Ctangus...Not that I disagree, I just want to know where the KB is before I commit. Actually, I am moving the US CV combo to Makin to give any Japanese tourists a warm welcome. Hospitality with a smile I say...But it will take another 2 turns to get there. My guess is he falls for the bait as if he only has played AI, he will not expect the Spanish Inquisition[:)]!
Anyway 2nd turn was relatively boring, with one very disappointing exception.
After the quick fall of Wake[:@]....HK goes on the 2nd turn[:@][:@]
Other than that not much. Air attacks few....Not many of his convoys other than the obvious ones spotted near the Philipines...The bulk of the transports are so far ok in their attempted excape.[8D]

The MSW penguin might actually excape, damage is minor...Am sending to Midway, am happy to see it get nailed on the way by the KB if it reveals the location of KB.

KB withdrawing slowly. Still to close to send out ASW fleets.
He has not dispersed subs....Another turn of withdrawal and ASW fleets will prowl PH.
3 BBs battered but survive fine unless he does decide to punish me another turn or 2 at PH.
Elsewhere....Hard to say....I do not see anything, outside of the original attack coming, but hey, it is only turn 2....
Some of my moves...Mining Jolo (and then putting a dutch sub there).. Also moving out the base unit there. Also moved the EAB unit (via DD) out as well. Outside of base units, the only units there the only other high priority escapee will be the combat engineer unit. Bases at islands will slowly go out as well.
Was annoyed. Clark was left alone, but not one of the many damaged planes fixed.
In DEI much of fleet at harbor in Batavia. Mines have been laid. MLs back to Tricom (only size 9 port near there.) 0-19 and 0-20 have mined Miri and Brunei..Subs waiting there as well. If I nail 1 transport I will be happy.
Was happy neither Sing nor Clark got nailed this turn, could be the weather though.
Did pull some of the HK airfield out via FT...1 DD escaped 44 bombers....A rather lucky roll there.
orderly retreat to my line in Burma...
Worried about China as I have not enough experience there...But the recent thread on China helped a lot!
Also, the CL at PM is will take out a small chunk of a unit at Rabual (the one that starts off as Southwest area. Might as well save a unit kernal. Am rushing of a bunch of Cas/Cls to Shortlands so Once I have 4-6 there (I guess 3-4 days) I can do night runs into Rabual to try to torture some hapless transport units or fight Bombardment units....

RE: Tokyo Wars! Jeffs (a) vs Senkatana (j) - Nik Mod 5.02
Well my Makin raid was a little disappointing....Missed the CAs[X(]...Did sink 2 MLs though and I love sinking MLs[:'(].
Other than that night too much. He is being aggressive in China. 4 units have entered Changsha, and others are on the march to Yenan...Then again, I am not sure how much he fully recognizes these are level 9 forts [:D]. He might be in for a nasty surprise (I did inform him this was part of NikMod...)...
I would be happy if he tries to just bulldoze....He will push me back...But eventually...
Very little follow up in Malaya, DEI and PI....The original attack fleets are there, but no follow up...
KB now by Franch Frigate...Still to close to start ASW...Though I bet he tries a run to my CVs...They will be long gone..I really want to stay but now is not the time to play chicken with my CVs....

RE: Tokyo Wars! Jeffs (a) vs Senkatana (j) - Nik Mod 5.02
How cool to have a Japanese person playing an American! And interesting to hear that there are 3 Japanese websites on WITP -- as well as Japanese games based on the war. Good luck to you both!

RE: Tokyo Wars! Jeffs (a) vs Senkatana (j) - Nik Mod 5.02
Well this turn was no surprise and at the same time holds a rather potentially unpleasant surprise....
He did turn around for another attack on PH...That was no large surprise (in anticipation, I did not have ASW fleets active).[;)]
And as a bonus, his first wave, unescorted[:D] went after an AVD outside Pearl Harbour. It sunk, but my fighters did a credible job and killed around 13 of those vermin..
Then the big wave hit the harbor with fairly predictable results[:o]. The Maryland was sunk with batches of damage to other ships. 28 of the attackers were shot down. At this point a KB loses around 30 planes a whack..
So he lost 46 attack planes this turn from the KB for a total of 59.....It is still an awesome weapon, but if he takes a couple more whacks, it will definitely need some refitting.
The surprise is there is a small (1 warship, 2 transports) a few hexes south of the KB headed southeast...
So could be Johnson if it backtracks, Palmyra if he wants to go a long way or other Hawaii (a bit small for PH though)......[X(][8|]....Well taking as much precautions as possible but if the KB continues to hang out, I need to be careful....
A Sing based attack on his fleet failed utterly....
Movement continues in China (he is approaching Yenan and Inchang, bombarded Changsha.
I got the base out of Victoria point the day before he got troops there[8D]....
Sending PTs to Johnson Island and a quick run at the position of the KB...
Futile, but hey, they are just PTs!

Head Fake?
Well it seems the KB and the transport TF have backed off, at least for this turn[8D]
They are now just a hex south of French Frigate....
He was not thrilled losing 50 attack planes.
He has about 10 subs in PH it self[X(]. As soon as the KB gets more than a turn away, termite hunting will begin.
If he insists on hanging near PH, I have an idea for a nasty surprise...Please comments from the peanut gallery on this idea.
Send in Carrier fighters/SBDs from stand off range (he can not go east of PH until he reaches base once as part of our house rules) into Hilo. With 4 CVs and the extra Buff unit in San Diego we are looking at something like 70-80 crap fighters and 144 SBDs....Then fly them into PH ready to attack the next turn...
We are playing Nik mod so I figure 40-60 SBDs get through...I doubt I sink any CVs, but if a few IJN CVs take decent damage, I would figure he would want withdraw ASAP...Any comments?
Other than that, he finally started land attacks in Malaya...One of my units managed to hold in spite of long odds[;)]
No good stuff from Sigint....

KB Retiring???
KB has started retire such that even if it goes full speed to the PH area it would take 2 turns to arrive...
So OPERATION TERMITE is ordered to commence immediately.
So 3 ASW fleets of 3 deploy. He has around 30 subs hanging around the PH area including around 8 in the port area itself. In addition to the ASW fleet, about 30 planes (from Commandos to Bolos, B-17s and SBDs) are sub hunting as well...
It would be nice to cull a few over the next week (about 3 or 4 have eaten bombs the last week, but no reports of sinking)...The disadvantange of all this is my mining runs are off until I can clear a few of these subs out.
Other than that, starting to change Dutch units on various islands to southwest pacific and then move them to the large, important cities (Palenberg, Sorj)...If I was running away with the Dutch troops I would think it is gamey. But I am just redeploying them. I want those oilfields in ruins when he finally gives me the boot.

A CA group seen heading to Truk....
Generally pretty mellow. He is moving hard into PI...I think I need to evacuate Manila next turn or so....

RE: KB Retiring???
"end in Carrier fighters/SBDs from stand off range (he can not go east of PH until he reaches base once as part of our house rules) into Hilo.
"
seems like a good plan if he comes back.
As for ASW .. unless exp is better than 70 iirc your better off using 100% naval search at 1-6K ( watch morale). and hopeing for a lucky bomb hit, also with a lot of spottable targets thier experience will go up quick too.
With my game (nik mod 1.801) I dnt think ive ever hit a sub with ASW planes, made them hide yes, sunk no.. same with my subs operating in the DEI.
Good luck Jeffs ,, love the avatar too [;)]

RE: KB Retiring???
Rob thanks for your comments...And, at least with PBYs, you are probably correct.[;)]
I erased the combat report by mistake, but the upshot of
OPERATION TERMITE was this.
1 US DD lost [&o]
1 IJN sub heavily damaged by depth charges
9! 9! bombs hit IJN subs[:D]
No reports of sunken subs, but I got to think a few have to go off to repair. Of the 9 hits, 5 were from PBY flying search. The rest were from other planes flying ASW. So for next turn I am keeping Bolos, A-20s and SBDs in ASW, but b-17 and PBY2 go to search..I will try them at 1000 feet and if little attacks then at 6000.
Other news.....Moving planes out of Manila. Lost 3 transports in that area to Bettys. But my P-40s did ok...Knocked down 3 bettys and 2 zeroes for 2 P-40es.
China just seeing movement. He has not brough in enough to be decisive at Changsha. He is happy to bombard and kill 150 Chinese a day. I am happy to gain experience quickly. He is slithering down Malaya..But that is to be expected...Will send US CVs back to SF (I think he will bring the KB back to Pearl) but keep the planes at PH...High quality SBD might nail some subs....
Might have a battle at Rabual. He has a CA group coming down to support a TF.. I have 3 CA, 3CL and 2 DD at Buka...Time for a fight. I will probably getting roughed up badly...But I want him to be prepared to fight for territory.
Obviously (from now on) if he comes in with overwhelming force I will gratefully recede...But I do want him to realize if he does not come in prepared he might get chopped up... Hopefully, that will slow him down a bit.

Termite hell
Well it seems in Nik mod, ASW TFs should be renamed
ASS TF (anti surface ship) TF
Lost another DD sunk and 1 damaged while in PH itself. The sub took 16 close ones without any serious damage.....

But 6 bombs did hit IJN subs today. The I-16 twice.
At some point do bombs kill IJN subs? How many should do it? I mean these guys are far from base...Somebody, throw me a bone here....
Other than that, being forced back in Malaya.
My attack at Rabual just missed. I arrived at night, nobody was there. Then
3 IJN TFs started to infest Rabual. That said, perhaps it was a good thing. The CA group that I was itching to fight has 2 BBs[X(].
I like showing bravery to the enemy, that said, there is a line where that bravery is stupidity[&:]. And taking on 2 BBs (and 8 other ships) with that battlefleet would be stupid[:-]. Am retreating to Shortlands to hook up with the Boise (so 3 CAs, 4 Cls and 2 DDs.). Then will wait for developments.
As for PH, I am making a mega mining TF and will try to lay 700-800 mines a turn (it will have 17-18 DDs to make sure subs pay a price). Hopefully with a fw thousand mines I get lucky and a few subs wander into the minefield.....
