Russian Hanko Brigade

Post by Vinnie O »

Historically the Russians started the war with a "brigade" of over 26,000 men and hundreds of artillery pieces on a peninsula in Finland (Hanko, Hango?). This situtation existed because of the terms of the Finnish surrender in the Winter War.

In the actual fighting, most of the Hanko Brigade were evacuated by sea to Leningrad, a move which is impossible in WIR. If the Hanko Brigade is correctly positioned on a Russian-controlled hex in Finland it will be destroyed.

The counterpart to this is that the Finns committed significant forces to blocking the base of the Hanko pennibsula until the Russians left. This was primarily the 17th Infantry Division. Positioning the 17th Division next to Hanko would require it to be contained in a Corps counter, and the Finns are already desperately short of Corps.

Although I'd gladly watch the Russian player lose another 26,000 troops, I think that the simplest fix is to delay the arrival of the 17th Finnish Division until the first week of December, 1941, which was apparently marks the end of the Russian evacuation of their base.

Great idea. I had given a little thought to the issue of the naval base at Hango, and as you said it really doesn't work in WIR, so I dropped the issue. This is a good solution that should be easy to do.

Thanks much.
