Special troops

Post by Mist »

Is there any special use for such troops as
Mountain, Cavalry, JG and Sturm Infantry?
I am also wondering about att/def values of various national infantry. Can anyone help me? And one more question Image Can I transfer indep. panzer bns out of the division which holds it. I want to get rid of infantry support panzers and form a panzer division.

AFAIK, these divisions are treated like ordinary infantry divisions, except for the cavalry divisions. Arnaud, the programmer, has made cavalry divisions which will not suffer readiness losses if it moves with a panzer korps, so using cavalry divisions in panzer korps, or as reinforcing units in a panzer army, now makes sense.

Only equipment, i.e. tanks, artillery, and AT guns, have attack and defense factors. Infantry is treated as a generic unit. For infantry what matters is experience and readiness. So except for experience and readiness, there is no distinction between infantry of different nationalities.

I like the idea, there should be national differences between infantry, something like the differences in SPWaW, but its too late for something like this to make it into the WiR update.

And one more question Image Can I transfer indep. panzer bns out of the division which holds it. I want to get rid of infantry support panzers and form a panzer division.
Tank battalions that are assigned to a division can't be removed from that division.

Look in the Finnish HQ from the Campaign '41 scenario. The "211th Panzer Bn" is an independent tank battalion; you can move it around between korps. The Sturm infantry division in the 13th Korps at location 27,27 has a "178th Stug Bn" assigned to the Sturm division. You only see it when you select the infantry division for display. That tank battalion can not be moved anywhere else; its assigned to the Sturm division permanently.

You could try to form a "tank" unit by using independent battalions, but it will not be very strong. It will still need infantry, artillery, and AT gun support (i.e. like a panzer division), but you only have 8 slots in a korps. The best you can do is to "simulate" a panzer division, but a normal panzer korps has 2 or more panzer divisions in it plus, usually, more infantry from a motorized division and additional artillery units. I don't think its worth the effort. Also, later on, your infantry is going to need that tank support. Thats what the independent tank battalions are for.

Thanx for answer. I agree with you, but even not full strength tank korps is still as mobile as a full strength one.

About Cav. Divisions. In what version is their mobility implemented? I play 2.1+, but it seems that they lose their readiness as fast as generic infantry.

The change to cavalry movement is in the current beta being worked on. I don't know when the next release will be.

As for an undersized panzer korps, just pray your opponent doesn't figure out it is a weak unit. Image

Are there any chances of small change in rules which allows JG units move/plot through the forrest/swamp with lesser readiness loss? The same question is with Mountain troops and Mountains(this one is of lesser importance).

What advantage does JG troops provide? I don't know anything about JG units.

I agree with you about the mountain troops, but there isn't that many of them to matter so much, you can make just one infantry korps out of them on the Axis side. Worst of all, they only become useful, for either side, if the Axis make it to the Caucuses. Otherwise they're just infantry by another name.

JG-Divisions were infantry divisions with only 2 regiments of infantry. Additional they had less heavy artillery than infantry divisions. They had a lot of small support weapons. Their terrain was swamps or forests, where the jägerdivisions fought in small groups, not in regimental size.
Their advantage in comparison to a infantry division was larger speed in difficult terrain.

Thanks Frank. You know, I'll bet money that the game doesn't distinguish between JG and normal divisions, and gives the JG units the same amount of equipment and replacements as a regular infantry division.

You are right Ed:
In Wir infantry divisions start with 80 squads (what is in the game a regiment) more than jg divisions (240-160). After that they are filled to 240 squads.
