No artillery showing in the support section of Plan Attack window

Post by JudgeDredd »

I am playing one of the Warsaw Pact v North West Germany (first game) and when I plan attack, I do not see any support vehicles (artillery). I have seen helicopters which are within range, but, as yet, I have not noticed any artillery.

The attack I was going to plan, I had 3 artillery units nearby, two of which had a range of 7 and were within range, the other one had a range of 2 and was not in range, so I would have expected to see the two arty units in the support section of the plan attack.

Forgive me if there is something in the manual...I haven't read it yet and plan on doing so...but I haven't played TOAW for sooooo long, I just wanted to dive in and have a go...this was just something which stuck out.

Thx

Artillery units will appear in the Support Window if you first place them on tactical support. You do this by right-clicking the artillery unit and selecting "Deploy: Tactical Reserve".

looks like it might be worthwhile for us old-timers to re-read the manual. I suppose this is in place of having the artillery dig in? This does seem more clear cut. Maybe I should go buy the game now.

Oh you can dig them in as well. To put them on Tactical support has the advantage that they can move again after battle. But when it comes to the end i would dig them in, especially when they are directly behind the frontline, so that they don't get involved in battle. If an artillery has zero movement points left and you need its defensive support fire for the enemy's turn you can also put it at tactical reserve (instead of digging in, what is not possible with zero MPs).

This has been the case since COW. Artillery appears in that box, and can support passively, if it is on a setting other than mobile. I believe this included retreated and routed, but this was one of the bugfixes they were looking at for TOAW III. It is of course possible just to assign the units directly without using this box at all.

I just need to curb my enthusiasm and read the manual and stop asking daft questions which are answered by said manual.

My apologies for citing this as a bug.

File it under PICNIC
