As I mentioned in another thread we will endeavour to try out something for our next game Battles from the Bulge ( BFTB ). What I have in mind is to use one estab file for each of the different series. We have five at the moment underway - West Front, East Front, Mediterranean/North Africa, Pacific and Modern. HTTR and BFTB belong tot he West Front series. COTA belongs to the Mediterranean series.

So for BFTB we hope to have one estab file that will include those from HTTR. We will endeavour to write some conversion routines so that maps from HTTR can then be converted to the new format. However, it will be us to users to develop new scenarios. We will not be redoing the HTTR scenarios.

Can I say Dave, that my gut feel is, that if you released an East Front title, say a Kharkov 42-43 next, you'd sell a road train's worth of discs overnight.

There would be nothing like it anywhere in the history of gaming.

Happy long weekend mate,
Adam.

Thanks Adam.

I agree. The first in the east front series will be "Red Star Rising" ( RSR ) and will cover the battles around the Chir River and Op Star as the Soviets launch their offensives to cut off Stalingrad. There are a lot of challenges to developing a good east front series. The first and most important thing to cover is to differentiate between the Soviet and Western doctrines. While the differences in doctrine between the Germans and the Western Allies were fairly minor, they were quite significant between the Germans and the Soviets, especially in the offensive. So we will be focusing on implementing the different Soviet doctrine as the BIG feature for RSR.

You guys at Matrix are truly amazing: that is why I continue to support the games you release. I like the genre and I like the things you folks do. You should be commended, congratulated, esteemed, deified, idolized, personified, and ever-other-postive-adjective-in-the-English languaged. :)

Excellent work and good luck on the next in the series. You've got something here with this series that I believe can be worked unitl eternity.

Nice work!

Won't that mean it's mainly a Ruskies vs Romanians thing? As the Russians went through them like a hot knife through butter, will that be able to hold people's interest in the longer term?

Kharkov does seem to be an unbelievable place to set a wargame. I suppose the fact that equipment changes a fair amount from Autumn 41 to Autumn 43 makes it difficult to to cover all the battles that occurred near there.

Not at all Neilster. The first idea was to make a game around the 11.Pz.Div. heroic stance on the Chir river during the first half of January. You have Balck as the commander of 11.Pz.Div. and Mellenthin as the CoS of the XLVIII.Pz.K. it serves under. Mellenthin actually talks about that in his book "Panzer Battle"

Hmm, so if I got this right, you'd be able to play the HTTR scenarios via BFTB (with all the new functionality). This is something you're hoping to allow, but won't be doing yourselves. Users would have to do the conversion themselves, but you'd provide us with some... routines? Is this something that'd be viable for the average player with no knowledge of much technicality?

It will be like designing a new scenario but the map and OOB will be lifted from the previouse version. So the biggest "chore" will be getting the play balance right with the revised engine. And that is always a chore for any game.
So the last thing you will need is technical ability but the fist thing will be patience.
