Middle East Oil

Post by worr »

Any particular reason why there is no oil available to ship to India fromt he middle east? I assumed there would be surplus. It is July 42 and I'm dry.

I don't think the oil in the Middle East was very developed until the 1950s.

The Germans went after North Africa to try and close the Suez to GB.  Not so much because they were going to try an grab the oil there (again, no infrastructure).

But I could be wrong on that one.

There's lots in RHS - maybe have a look at the research they did for that one. I think (half guessing) that the oil in India in stock was actually mid-east in origin. With the extended map it got moved to mid-east proper.

There is oil in the Aden base in CHS as well (at least after Aden was fixed), but there is not enough there as there should be. I am adjusting the Aden base resources again for CHS 2.04. The oil is increasing, but the fuel and supply may actually decrease as I might have given them too much of those when I fixed Aden. In the older CHS scenarios the British daily supply and fuel allotment was considerably reduced, and I will make sure that is still the case now.

There was some oil being produced in the region during the war.

The "oil shiekdoms" were already that when WWII began. Nothing like they bacame later. Iraq and Iran also exported considerable oil - and it was easier to get to India than other places. The oil was greatly increased in the 1950s as Andrew says - but see the 1939 edition of the Oxford Economic Atlas - or the Encyclopedia Britannica of that year (with a quite wonderful OB of the entire world!) as well as economic breakdown - they KNEW this would not be published again for a while.

According to Oil & War by Robert Goralski and Russell Freeburg Iraq produced 84,000 barrels of oil daily with 75,000 coming from the 42 wells in Kirkuk. Iran had 70 wells producing 3,000 barrels a day.
