Funny looking little fellas who don't now how to fight and run at the first sight of trouble. Substandard manufacturing and inferior products compared to US products. You can start to understand the stereotyping of the Japanese that was prevelant at that time, and the hard lessons which had to be learn't becuase of it.

Though I vaguely remember some cartoons from the 50's that dealt with our WW2 enemies in what would now be a politically incorrect manner that one seems a bit over the top.

War is so much nicer now that we are sensitive to the hopes, dreams and aspirations of our enemies; don't you think?

Me thinks both sides had to learn the hard truths about the other...........their view of westerners as soft, etc. cost them plenty also.....like a war!

This one looks sorta familiar - at least Popeye on his little subchaser/whaler does... but the one i saw involved a submarine iirc. But, i probably saw that close to 50 years ago, and details are a bit fuzzy... [:'(]

In this age of Political Correctness I suppose one is expected to be indignant and appalled at such stereotyping and gross insensitivity.
To which I say "Ahh Bullshit" - it was a wartime cartoon, made for an American audience at a time when unspeakable atrocity was a daily fact of life. It was simple humor, nothing more.

As another wartime cartoon collection from Warner Brothers Studios pointed out: "if we couldn't Blitz Hitler, Mussolini, and Tojo out of existence - at least we could have a laugh at their expense".

Thanks for the link. Was that sound at the very end (the rushing sound of water) what I thought it was? :P

Yeah well, in today's scrunched-up PC world, that's a big fat no-no...

Maybe we don't like this kind of propaganda today because we believe that in a transparent democracy the truth will do instead. Citizens of a Democracy shouldn't require a racist cartoon to whip them up into a frenzy, they should be spoken to as adults.

Some of you think we are too PC today, but do you really want a bunch of propaganda cartoons depicting Arabs in a racist way? We supposedly arent fighting against the entire race, just the terrorists.

So why insult the entire race. We don't even have a specific nation to declare as enemy. just some vague description--"terrorist"

Not everything is motivated by "Political Correctness" and the old ways are not always the best.

curiously, the reverse is not true as non-Muslims are routinely characterized as being subhuman or nonhuman by Muslims (at least by the Saudis, but others as well iirc), even in the official curriculum of their schools (not just in the press)

Occasionally I question the premise that it is possible to kill the enemy without hurting his feelings.

Hi, Children of nations at war are afraid. They are afraid the "bad guys" will come and hurt them.  I'm not sure if telling a 5 year old the truth will ease their fears.  They need to be assured
1. The good guys are winning
2. The bad guys deserve what they get.

Of course the problem from this is you have adults that believe it.

I agree with Mog here. I have a 6 year old and the world is definitely divided into goodies and baddies and the goodies have to win. The concept that the enemy are just people as well and that the only realy monsters are people who, in many ways, are not too different from you and I, is something which requires more maturity to understand. Being closer to your teens I would say, when you start to become more aware of the world around you.

However, in 1942 TV's were pretty much unheard of and cinemas were the only venue for many people to watch films and news reels, cartoons such as pop-eye where meant for adults as well as children.
