Red Thunder, Okimaw vs MrBendy

Post by Okimaw »

MrBendy and I are going to have a game of Red Thunder and decided we'd do an AAR. I've been an aprrentice to master AAR craftsman Larry Fulkerson for a few games so I will try and make this interesting as I'm sure MrBendy will as well.
Okimaw is playing the Warsaw Pact forces, inheritors of the Red Army legacy of The Great Patriotic War against facism. MrBendy is playing the is playing the lazy capitalist oppressors of the workers.
Here are the Warsaw Pact moves for the first turn

I've had a request to demonstrate how the controls work on GIFanimator, so for everybody who wants to use it:

My first turn was simply to try and put something in the way of the big red steamroller heading towards me. Probably not worth posting a picture until next time!

So, Okimaw,

Would you be willing to outline your strategic plan so we can see what's going on in your head as you make your moves from turn to turn? Or not because Bendy can see this thread... :)

I won't go totally into detail but there were two main routes that figured into the WP forces concept for socalled "rapid warfare" against NATO during the cold war era. If you've read anything on the subject you'll know what I'm talking about. I plan to use a combination of both routes as well as utilizing ab forces as much as possible. I prefer to leave the Austria question dangling.

[:)] hehe, I now point to my signature. Hopefully MrBendy hasn't read much on the subject. :)

I saw the sig but some terrain just happens to be ideal for armored warfare, can't be helped

OK, bit more input from me.

Turn 2 Review Story so far… Pact airborne forces dropped mainly north of Dusseldorf, and east of Frankfurt. Limited damage, except to supply lines. In the north, Kiel and Hamburg have fallen, and the German 1st Korps driven back. On top of that this turn they are in orange status, which is very irritating – maybe some Soviet jamming of the CCC system. Between Hamburg and Hannover the situation is critical – the entire front seems frozen and unable to move. East of Bielefeld the situation is not much better; I have almost nothing to pit against the 3rd Shock Army. The Fulda gap received the attention I thought it would,  but the American and Germans at least can maneuver this turn.In the south a similar situation; all my forces orange. The Austrians have reported ominous tank movements to the east of Vienna – an intervention next turn maybe?

Air status
Handling the air war is not something I’m very confident about.
Whilst I have cost the Soviets far more planes than I, I figure if I am going to slow down the main armoured thrusts, I’m going to need to do two things; destroy his air cover, and blow as many bridges as possible. This turn France announced active support for NATO, so I now have the FAF as additional support.
I desperatly need to shorten the line, and retreat to the Weser, but all my forces are frozen. Maybe this reflects the political difficulty, maybe the fact the Pact has immediately used chemical weapons – hopefully I will be granted chemical release, if not my supply is going to be shot.

Priority 1 : Preserve my forces

Prioirty 2 : win the air war

So, given the frozen nature of my forces, I will focus on two things, an aggressive air counter-attack, try and mop up the airborne troops, and move as much reinforcement forward as possible.   Results Hopeless with virtually my entire force disabled. I despair to think of what is going to happen next turn…
