Repairing Railroads

Post by *Lava* »

Hi!

Just a couple questions I've always wondered about and I know it is scenario dependent... but I'll ask it anyway.

Most times when I want to repair a railroad I simply place my rail repair unit next to the first broken railway hex next to a good railway hex and leave it there. Usually the next turn it is repaired (again this depends on the scenario so let's take that for a given).

Here's the questions:

First, does it really make any difference by ordering the unit to repair the railway, or is the result the same as just by placing the unit in the proper hex?

And second, does anyone ever use HQ's to assist in rail repair, does it help increase the repair effort appreciably or is this a waste of an asset?

Thanks for any responses.

1) Yes. It makes a difference. Scenario designers can set a RR Repair capacity which the program uses to automatically repair broken rails. And this needs to be viewed totally separately from units with RR Repair ability.

2) No. I don't think so. It can help in the sense that it might improve supply and make your unit more efficient, but I'd consider it a waste of an asset unless the HQ has some RR Repair ability itself.

One tip- if your unit with RR Repair capacity has a lot of it, you could break it down and try and repair more than one hex per turn.[;)]

Hi!

Sooooo... I'm playing the Barbarossa 41 scenario right now.

I've got three rail repair units working a line. So you would recommend clicking on "repair railroad" and seeing if it worked, and if it didn't then try it with the next unit.. etc. There used to be a little noise that told you that the repair was successful.

I believe the HQ's in the scenario do have a rail repair capability and although they are invaluable in pushing your blitz ahead, I was thinking about shuffling one over to the repair group to "spur them on" and maybe help out a bit.

The main benefit is by making the program logic look at an unrepaired hex in the middle of 2 repaired ones. I'm not positive about this but I think it will make the logic using the scenario RR Repair ability (as opposed to those of specific units) more likely to repair the one in the middle. It can give you some control over whether the rail line to Moscow gets fixed rather than the one to Odessa.

HQs spurring on. These RR Repair units don't move fast and they are usually on railways. So they're getting the best supply possible. I'm not aware of an HQ unit in this scenario with a Rail Repair ability but if you point one out I'll take a look.

You should do this- it's the main function of the RR repair units.

The automatic RR repair occurs regardless of whether you have used this function. It seems that the game engine uses it in areas where you already have RR repair units (I don't know if it goes by unit icon on RR repair capability).

..my impression was automatic repair was related to the quality of the RR-unit, the bigger it is, the better it's readiness, the greater the chance of an automatic repair

Yes, the more rail repair crews (depending on map/time scale), the better the proficiency, the better readiness and supply are the better the rail repair capability.

Note: Blown rail bridges need just engineering capability to be repaired as far as i know.
