URGENT Please Help - Crashing

A friend of mine I convinced to try CoG, got his copy and has been trying to play it today, but...

What happens is, as soon as he reaches the screen where the game is trying to load up (the progress bar is filling up along the bottom), it reaches about 3/4 of the way and then he gets a Microsoft error - sorry must shut down error message...and the game screen goes away.

Any advice, other experiences, help? He has a fairly state of the art computer that runs games like Everquest and World of Warcraft with no problems...

Note: he is getting the Plato-MFC error...

The two problems we've had like this have both been related to the wrong sound drivers being installed (or in one of the cases, somebody with two sets of sound drivers installed.)

Does he have a RAID array?  We have had one report of someone who had problems getting the game to load on a RAID.

Is he running a 64 bit version of Windows?  COG doesn't support 64 bit versions of Windows and won't run on them.

If you can, would you get me more information about his system?

Thanks kindly for the prompt response. He has verified that it is a sound card issue, and is working on it.

If for some reason this doesn't solve the problem (should know tomorrow afternoon), I'll post here again, otherwise, thanks again for the advice.
