AI 'Deny Crossing' Annoyance

Post by sanch »

Playing 'Charge of the Centaurs' as the Greeks. I figured the bridge south of Kerasovan Pass would be key. If I blew the bridge, then there would be no way the Italian armor could get south of the river. So I took an infantry regiment, and attached (a) an artillery unit, and (b) the one and only engineer unit, and told the regiment to 'Deny Crossing' exactly on top of the bridge - see attached screenie.

I noticed two weird things.

First, the artillery unit was put right into the front line. Strange, as these were 155mm indirect-fire units. So I took manual control of the artillery and moved it back 10 km or so. Dumb.

Second, the AI put the engineer platoon into the front line - and too far away from the bridge to prime it. So I had to take manual control of the engineer and move it back to the bridge where it did start to prime.

If I attach an engineer to a unit, and then tell the unit to 'Deny Crossing', and mark the bridge itself as the point to 'Deny Crossing', then the AI really ought to insure the engineer is close enough to the bridge to be able to prime the bridge.

Am I missing something here, or am I simply expecting too much out of the AI. Note that in other situations, I've been impressed with how the AI organizes its defenses.

One particular about this scenario - you MUST leave control to the AI to avoid overloading the boss. So it was only with great reluctance that I took control of the engineer so it would start to prime the bridge.

Thanks,
sanch
