Confused about Scenarios??

Post by XLegion »

I have just received the full cd edition of "Harpoon III" from Matrix after having downloaded the digital version. I have two questions.

1.) Do I need to re-insall the game if the digital download version is working? Is there any reason to own the CD version except as a backup?

2.) Will the World War II scenarios and the other "homemade" scenarios that are available from the HARPOON HEADQUARTERS SITE work on this version of Harpoon? I don't want to go messing around with this version in order to get the other scenarios to work. Although they have a page dedicated to sorting out all of the version of HARPOON, I am still confused as to compatibility issues.

Any information appreciated.

1) The CD is a backup - IIRC there are no differences between the digital download version and the CD one.

2) This is a complex question. Basically, you can install how many third-party DBs you wish without messing with the game at all. Just go to the "Databases" folder and create a new subfolder for the DB you wish to install. For example, if you wish to use DB2000 create a subfolder called "DB2000" in your "Databases" folder. Put all the DB2000 files here. For scenarios, create a "Scenarios" folder *inside* the one you created for the DB, and put all its scenarios there.

When you launch the game using the launcher (H3Launcher.exe) you will notice a "Database Manager" tab. Go there, and you will see a pull-down menu with all the DBs you have in your Database folder. Choose one and launch the game: you will see that now the engine uses that DB, while on the loading screen you will find the scenarios for it. If you want to return to the original one just close the game and choose it from the Database tab.

However, as of this writing, it is not sure if all the scenarios designed for third-party DBs will work as advertised. It is reported that there are some bugs - or at least differences since the previous version of the game - altering victory conditions, navigation zones and other factors needed for the scenario to work as intended by the designer. My advice is to check on the DBs' home pages, ask the designers themselves or watch this space for more infos. Just now I'm mainly playing MP with the stock DB.

Thanks for the information Vincenzo, I will try those suggestions and try to get some answers on the Harpoon Official forum.

If you are interested, the scenarios designed for the PlayersDB have already been set up to work around this.

All you need to do is:

1) Visit the StrategyZoneArchives.
2) Grab a scenario or DB file.
3) Unzip it into your ANW Databases folder according to the instructions.

All the requisite sub-folders and files will be created for you. No muss, no fuss. [8D]
