CHS base package update available

Post by Andrew Brown »

Since a few more ships were found in CHS that appear with a pink background on the combat screen, another update is now available for the CHS base package (which contains all of the art files and documentaiton for CHS).

All of the art fixes are now available in a single base package update file. This file ONLY contains the fixed files, so if you are installing CHS you need to download and install the actual base package (Currently version 2c) first, then this update.

If you have already installed CHS 2.x, then you can download and install this update file to get all of the art fixes.

The update package can be applied to any version of the base package for CHS 2. That is: base package versions 2, 2b or 2c. The version number of the update package is 2d, which will also be the version number of the base package itself once it is available.

To install the package, unzip it - retaining the file paths - to the folder where WitP is installed, then run the ModSelect utility to load the updated art into the game.

Note that the version numbering system for the base packages is different from that used for the scenarios themselves, as the package is independent from the actual scenarios. The CHS base package (and this update) can be used with any scenario version of CHS 2.x

Also - this update can be used for any CHS game in progress. You do not need to start another game to get the fixed art.

The file is available from the CHS download page at my WitP website. Here is a direct link:

CHS_Art_Update_2d.zip

Thanks to those who have pointed out the errors, and special thanks to CobraAus for fixing the Allied ships. If anyone finds more ships with pink backgrounds after installing this update, please let me know.

Scenario 159

1) B25C does not carry any bombs. It seems to me it is a bug unless system uses some default hardcoded bomb load.

2) There is also one of the old Japanese battleships (Haruna? Kongo?) that has pink background on the naval combat screen.

3) I have mixed feelings about air combat. It is definitely less bloody. During more than month gameplay only few times did I experience total bloodshed air battle when almost all planes of one side were destroyed by another. It seems however that Brewsters and Bufflos have great difficulty to make any significant damage even when intercepting unescorted bombers (which have now much higher durability). They damage a lot of planes but not one kill even though those are 4 machine gun machines. They scored few kills against Nates, Oscars and even Zeroes.

All in all the game is very interesting. Two thumbs up [;)]

That ship should have been corrected in the latest update (2d). Are you sure you loaded the art with ModSelect after you installed the update?

All I did was extract the material from the zip into the relevant file structure as it was an already updated CHS package.

You also need to run the ModSelect utility to load the art files into the game. That will then load the updated files as well.

This is a general problem with the CHS "experimental" scenarios - there are other aircraft that are also affected - and I will be fixing it ASAP. Unfortunately the fix can't be applied to existing games, so I aould advise you to start again when the fix is available.

Interesting observation. If this is definitely a problem then I will have to come up with a tweak to reduce the effect. I will wait for more feedback from other players.

Thanks for the comments,

Just noticed that. I fixed my save file for B25 when I noticed same thing will happen for A20 and others. Funny thing is that it is not enough to fix aircraft data, you have to fix air group data too (and vice versa). Gotta love the data structure . Modding this game is a hell, you are my heroes.

Note the P43 Lancer in Portland in scenario 159. I don't know what the picture is.

I am just about to have another crack at getting CHS installed. I can access and download scenario 157, but the links for 155, 156 and 158 do not seem to work. Are they being worked on or am I doing something wrong?

After installing the files, did you run the ModSelect utility to load the art into the game? You need to do that to allow the new art to be used.

Apparently not.. I just ran it and that fixed the problem. Had some other hoops to jump through after that to get my map fixed again, but everything appears to be okay now. I reran a turn where the POW was involved in a nighttime combat and the graphics were the way they are supposed to be (I think!).
