HyperWar 42. (Not for Jutland13)

Post by Nemo121 »

Well this marks the beginning of an AAR in which I am playing as the Allies. I think I've been on record before as saying that the Sir Robin strategy is not, IMO, the best strategy for the Allies to employ in 1941-42 and that the conventional wisdom which seems to apply herein whereby hasty retreat before the Japanese juggernaut is advocated may not be the best way to proceed.

Consequently I plan to meet the juggernaut, if not quite head on, than at least with a sharp chop to the neck and a much stronger right hook into the stomach... actually that isn't quite accurate. I intend to go for the heart by smashing my fist through Japan's teeth, sticking my arm down its throat and hoping I can rip its heart out before it clamps its jaws shut and traumatically amputates my arm ;). Gees, I definitely read too many anatomy books [X(]. The teeth will be the defences the Japanese put up in their northern islands. The throat will be the northern home island bases and the jaws which can clamp even after the teeth ( fighters, bombers, light surface units) are destroyed obviously comprise Japan's CVs.

So, how to go about this... Simple, our house rules basically boil down to the following:
1. Japanese forces can gain as much advantage from the Turn 1 Move Bonus as they wish. If they can hit Pago-Pago, PM etc on Turn 1 then so be it. I wish them luck.

2. Japanese forces can mount as many port attacks with full surprise on Day 1 as they wish.

3. No limitation on Japanese CV movements after 7th December 41. IOW if they want to raid the east coast or hang around Pearl for another week then so be it.

4. No restriction on plane upgrades. If a divebomber unit CAN become a level bomber unit then the Japanese player can do so. The same, naturally, applies to the Allies in terms of twin-engined to four-engined changes.

5. No aerial mining if there are any Japanese planes present at the base.

6. No limitations on air transportation or paratroop actions.

7. No limitation on surface ship or submarine mining.

8. No limitation on Kwantung Army forces moving into China. No need to pay PPs. Obviously though if the level of troops in Kwantung falls below 8,000 an the Soviets are activated then I'll take advantage of this.

9. Soviet Union. 14 to 28 days warning of invasion of the Soviet Union has to be given via an unopposed invasion of Mongolia. During this warning period Allied forces can be transferred into the Soviet Union and Soviet forces can be redeployed. Once the Soviet Union falls any surviving Soviet forces will have replacements turned OFF.

10. China. NO Chinese units will respawn anywhere other than China ( unless they are already set to do so at game's beginning). Once all Chinese cities fall all Chinese units will have replacements turned OFF. No restriction on bombing resources, HI etc etc in China.

11. India. If Karachi is cut off by Japanese forces ( cannot trace a supply route to other Allied bases or forces via road or rail hexes) then Karachi is assumed to be evacuated and Karachi will be deemed to represent Aden. All non-Indian forces can be moved to Australia and continue the fight from there via a safe lane ( 3 hexes wide and extending from the north-western map corner to Line 0,11 ( level with Bali) ). All Indian forces must remain in Karachi and cannot resume the fight unless Karachi is retaken. Invasion of India IS allowed.

12. Oz and NZ. once they have fallen OZ and NZ troops ( respectively) will have their replacements turned OFF if they survive elsewhere.

13. No restrictions on aircraft basing from carriers. If the programme allows it to fly from a carrier then it can fly from a carrier. E.g The Allies can put Corsairs on carriers, the Japanese their naval fighters other than Zeros/Zekes.

14. No splitting of LCUs to get rid of disruption/fatigue.

15. No use of B29s for naval attack. They were used strategically and the Allies have enough other level bombers for the mission. From 1st January 1943 Allied four-engine bombers cannot naval attack at lower than 15,000 feet and B29s can never naval attack.

16. Allied PT boats should be in TFs no smaller than 6 ( of course exception is made if losses are incurred) and must be created at a Level 8 or larger base.

17. No restriction on unit stacking.

18. No restriction on ASW TF size.

19. No Shock Attack + Pursue in wooded or mountainous terrain unless either paved roads or rails are present.

PDUs are ON, Jap Sub doctrine is OFF and Surprise is ON.
These restrictions are considerably harsher on the Allies than those applying in my current game as Japan. The reason is simply that I don't think these stricter rules will actually impact the development of the war negatively. With every territory except CONUSA in Japanese hands at the beginning of 1943 the Americans are still quite capable of winning all by themselves.

So, what's my plan?
Well it is simple enough. I'm going to conduct a forward defence of Kendari, Timor, southern Borneo and DEI. These areas WILL fall so the defence of these areas will not be to the death. On the other hand it will be bloody and cost both sides dearly. More importantly though it will cost the Japanese time, the one thing they cannot compensate for.

Allied forces in Malaysia will be withdrawn to the DEI and use to bolster the defences there. The Royal Navy and the Australian Navy will be forward-committed. Strikes will be made against all landing sites close to this notional "Line of Death" in order to attrit Japanese AP strength. Submarine forces will set up a blockade of southern Borneo and forces will move from Australia to bolster Kendari.

The Phillipines will really just be an area in which Allied forces hold out as long as possible while Allied forces in China will attack in the south, attempting to take Nanning and besiege Canton. If the Japanese fail to garrison the Vietnamese border then I will also exploit into Vietnam.

In the Pacific a two-divisional American attack will begin leaving port on December 8th to begin consolidating the Northern Route. This is where I intend to punch through the Japanese teeth, reach down their throat and attempt to rip their heart out. The rest, Baker, Canton etc will be left to the Japanese although I may try to hold Johnston depending on the situation.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/07/41

So, essentially a very good strike went in at Pearl sinking 2 BBs but the strikes at Manilla and Singapore appear to have been scrubbed by bad weather. Bad luck for Jutland but those are the breaks I suppose.

I presume this means that two AKs hit mines in approaching some of my bases and "bled over" into this portion of the combat report.

Tennessee and California sink immediately. The rest are damaged to varying degrees but half should be available within a few months with the rest repaired by late 1942. This is acceptable for me as I shouldn't be needing too many bombardment TFs until later in 1942.

Hmm, good assaults in the first day... I have some light forces available in southern Borneo which have been ordered to raid the invasion zones, have dispatched several engineer forces and regimental combat teams to various bases in the Aleutians and sortied the Royal Navy to DEI and the Australian Navy to Rabaul/PM.
John Dillworth: "I had GreyJoy check my spelling and he said it was fine."
Well, that's that settled then.

Hi, If you ever want a normal Allied or Japanese opponet let me know. (You write a really good AAR and I'd like a record of a normal game)

RE: HyperWar 42. (Not for Jutland)

Post by Nemo121 »

LOL! From everything I know Jutland is normal ;). I know what you mean though and I'd certainly be open to that...

I wouldn't have been 4 months ago when I first got the game BUT after a lot of thought over the last few weeks I've decided that house rules which restrict things aren't necessarily "bad" so long as they don't limit operational choices too much. So, once I get a bit of time in my schedule I will take you up on that. I'll drop you an email so we can chat about what would be "normal" ;).

Two of these transports are sunk. They are, unfortunately, empty but it still represents a whittling down of AP capacity and, more importantly, the serving of notice to my opponent that he needs to defend everything as I intend to attack whenever and wherever I can. Soviet doctrine stresses that there is NO such thing as impassable terrain and that terrain which verges on the impassable is often poorly defended and thus actually the best place to attack from. So, if it doesn't seem like I'll be attacking somewhere then that's where I'll try to attack from/into.

The Zeroes prove remarkably effective in clearing the way for the Japanese bombers. Still, I will continue my redeployment and continue to attrit their number. My goal for the end of week 1 is to clear the Japanese naval pilot pool ( 100 pilots) by inflicting 100 losses on Zero, Betty, Kate and Val squadrons. This will push the Japanese player into disbanding floatplane squadrons and slowly but surely running into a situation whereby his naval pilot pool can no longer sustain operations.

A good, solid hit. Unfortunately it does minimal damage and Haruna remains in the fight. I'm also going to base my T IVs near Kuching in order to deliver torpedo strikes on the BBs and APs supporting the landings there. Once I can force the BBs away I will drive a BB-centred bombardment TF into this crucial area to destroy the Zeroes and Bettys which will, undoubtedly, be rushed forward to base out of Kuching ( the only Level 4 airfield which the Japanese initial rush can take in the area).

Hmm, I'm surprised to see so many CVEs and CVLs in and around the Phillipines. I tended to task these ships to my offensive missions and not to mopping up of transports. Jutland seems to be a lot more cautious than me. I will test this over the course of the rest of the month and then, if it is proven, factor it into future operations.

Well, nothing really unexpected there. My first evacuation transports will reach Singapore tomorrow and from that day onward I will have to probably contend with serious Betty raids on the transports as they load. The AVG has been moved into the area in order to help out. Hopefully it can catch a few Betty raids before can make their torpedo runs.
John Dillworth: "I had GreyJoy check my spelling and he said it was fine."
Well, that's that settled then.

So far so good. My forces are making good progress towards Singapore, my bombers are flying many missions and gaining experience, my carriers have spotted the Japanese replenishment convoy north of Midway ( cloud-covered... typical), the British fleet is quickly making its way to Batavia to refuel before embarking on offensive operations and Japanese losses are being driven upward. Allied losses are, of course, high but that is, unfortunately, to be expected at this stage.

I think that heavy Japanese losses inflicted at this stage will tend to give my opponent check and force him to mount a smaller number of more heavily defended operations in future. This translates into a slower tempo of operations and works in my favour IMO. This will be worth losing the significant naval forces which I have committed to the area.

It will be nice to see a more active defense by the Allies. I try not to play just a "Sir Robin" approach as the Allies, but try to save certain units for use later on (Aviation units, large BF's, and engineer units). It is hard to find a balance when playing the Allies and hopefully your strategy will teach me some more. [&o]

The Northern route should be interesting as you have the weather to play against and I read about that possibility, but no one has done one successfully (yet).

I wish the Allies had more of those "nasty" Cleveland Class CL's (Boise) in the SRA. I usually send them from Pearl as soon as I can and have gotten lucky once at Rabaul when the invasion wasn't done soon enough. [:D]

Is this game a stock map and scenario??

Hi, I don't like the "Sir Robin" (If I did I would not have called it the Sir Robin) However as Japan I really like it when Allied players attempt to operate surface TF within my air range.  (I don't send TF out side of air cover or without escorting TF) I've sunk quite a few enemy ships lurking about Rabaul (I send 3xDaitai Betty/Nell to Truk on turn 1)

However the Allies must pin down Japanese forces inside the SRA right from the start of war for as long as they can. If they are not fighting in the SRA they are invading Oz or Noumea et al. Singapore should never be abandoned. (I send units to Singapore and I send a new commander for Malaya Army as well)

The Allied target is to hold inside the SRA till May 1942. (longer is better) You can replace every land unit but the non Dutch air groups should be extracted before their escape routes are closed. (short range ac must depart much sooner then long range ac)

The Chinese units that start assigned to SEAC require almost 2 months to reach central Burma and be rested and supplied. They should begin their march right away. Insure you build the "Hump" airfields ASAP and move the bulk of your trasnport ac to India.

Playing the Allies is fun and often it's a matter of time (I've had units reach a hex the very turn light Japanese forces began landing to capture the "empty" hex. However I do get tired quickly if the Japanese is one of the Empire builders (you know bombs Chinese resources and has the heavy guns from Manchuria in China)

I'd like the exploit type of game if the map was symetrical and both sides had the exact same starting array of units. (Then the player best able to plan Operations and economise force would have the advantage) I don't like playing calculators who study the starting deployments and reinforcement schedules and use these as the foundation for their war plans. I'm still hoping to find someone who will do the work of entering both players starting deployments in a free deployment game.

ny59giants,

Stock map and scenario... I felt that to change this would be to open myself up to further charges of cheating from various people and so I felt that the way to avoid this ( since I have no desire to get involved in that sort of discussion) was to set house rules which were quite restrictive for the Allies in this game.

So, I felt that if I went for an extended map I'd be leaving myself open to charges of changing things in favour of the Allies... and that some would use this as "proof" that I was a cheating SOB etc... A pessimistic view of forum dwellers? Perhaps but pessimism seems to be a fairly good predictor of what comes to pass.

So, really, I took the house rules I am suggesting for the continuance of my game as Japan, made them a bit more restrictive and harsher for the Allies and then began the game under as close to identical conditions as possible. I think my next game may well be an extended map game though since that would help avoid the Karachi fudge.

Mogami,

1. Singapore... I disagree. I think that by abandoning Singapore it may be possible to extend the life of Java/Sumatra etc. Singapore is non-essential and a major battle in Singapore doesn't damage oil and resources in Palembang etc. Major ground conflict in Palembang ( which can be guaranteed by basing many engineer and infantry units there) guarantees major damage to infrastructure. I may be wrong but I dislike conventional wisdom. It often points to a very cautious path and not the optimal path. I always attempt to analyse things myself and find the optimal path. I may, of course, be wrong.

2. Burma... This is another completely expendable arena. I don't intend to push any Chinese forces into it. I intend to have it make a nuisance of itself and then fold very quickly once the Japanese attack it seriously.

3. Under my rules the Japanese player is free to transfer any Japanese forces from the Kwantung army to China. I consider that this would have been reasonable and possible in the war and so I'm happy to allow it to be used against me when I'm the Allies. I admit this puts the Allied player at a severe disadvantage but I'm not ( despite what some might think) interested in maximising the chances of the side I play. I'm interested in giving flexibility to either side where it is reasonable to do so even if that disadvantages me in the current game. Of course, I've learned that it is VERY important to rigidly define what one means by "reasonable" ;).

4. Transport Aircraft. Good point... Will do that ASAP.

In your mirrored game scenario are you talking of mirrored forces in a mirrored deployment? E.g 16 identical bases held by each side with a 32 base no-man's land in between and equal supply, production etc etc levels? ( I'm using 16, 32 and 16 since that equals a chess board which is a completely mirrored game the like of which I think you are talking.) That sounds intriguing. If you ever got that done I'd be very interested in that.

True, but I doubt that any Japanes player wants to conquer Palembang before controlling Singapore (or shutting it down completely, as you did against itsjustme). The advantage of Singapore (and Manila, BTW) is that the air field can't be closed by naval bombardments. Together with a strong CAP (AVG), this makes the airfield safe until conquered in a land campaign. Transfer some 4Es into Singapore, and Japan must conquer Singapore before attempting to take Palembang, or otherwise the oil centers are destroyed by air raids. So I do think that holding Singapore does defend the oil fields at Palembang, too. Bandoeng and Madioen on the other hand, the only airbases on Java that can't be bombarded, are not large enough for 4Es.

Another advantage of defending Malaya as long as possible: a bold Japanese player could invade India immediately after taking Singapore, and postpone taking Palembang / Java. It would be very risky, but I think both can be taken before May 1942, when Japan runs out of oil/resources - but only if Singapore falls early.

Just some food for thoughts, actually I'm looking foward to see how your strategy works out. [:)]

Well I unfortunately forgot to save the 10th December. Basically not much of any major note happened except that Allied surface forces intercepted a few more Japanese naval forces and managed to sink a few more MSWs and APs, particularly around Rabaul.

The T IV As are having a fairly good war so far. Two more ships torpedoed today. It would appear that Kuching is being built up into a very major Betty base ( Davao and Amboina will, undoubtedly, follow suit). Great. I'll give Jutland a few days to move in a lot of bombers and then I'll commit the first of the battleships and CAs arriving from India to a bombardment run of Kuching. Risky as hell but fun if it comes off.

And the Allied assault out of Burma makes itself known. 4 Allied Brigades are going to attack into Thailand and Vietnam in an effort to discomfit the Japanese attack into Malaysia. It won't be anything at all decisive but it should complicate the Japanese operational picture, delay them a little and ( if Bangkok and a couple of other HI and Resource-rich places fall) act as a drain on their war economy which will take them some time to recover from.

The trick is going to be timing my withdrawal from Thailand so that the Japanese forces returning from the Malaysian peninsula don't get to cut off my route of retreat. Well war is risk and I think this is a pinprick worth risking some forces for.

RE: HyperWar 42. (Not for Jutland)

VSWG,

I think your assessment is absolutely correct. My strategy relies on putting my opponent off-balance with multiple little diversionary and pinprick attacks and then trying to withdraw before he can bring his overwhelming force to bear to crush my forces. If it goes wrong then he will be able to destroy my forward-deployed forces and advance much more quickly than would otherwise be possible. Still, sitting back and withdrawing to the rear before my forces find themselves right at the precipice leading to oblivion would be, to me, quite boring. I don't play to win, I play to conduct operations requiring skill with very little margin for error.

So, yeah, my current plan of operations is definitely not the "low-risk" alternative but to follow that option wouldn't be of any interest to me. Running multiple risky operations and suffering the occasional heavy defeat ( even if a low-risk strategy would, overall, be superior) is much more to my liking ;).

No matter which side ends up with the advantage it'll be quick, bloody and different and that's the important thing to me ;).

Since I've had a good handle on KB for the last few days ( it is hanging around north-west of Hawaii) and it has finally moved more than 12 hexes from Pearl Harbour I felt safe enough to send out a couple of ASW TFs... with immediate results. I-173 is suffers at least two DCs detonating in contact with its pressure hull and immediately sinks.

While my P-40 losses at Manilla are rising far too quickly it IS also serving my purposes insofar as every plane lost in action against the Japanese lowers the PP cost I must pay to evacuate these squadrons to the DEI. Obviously the higher the cost to the Japanese for this attrition of my forces the better.

Khota Bharu will fall tomorrow for sure. That's fine. My evacuation from Singapore is going well. 5,000 men have already reached Palembang with another 13,000 loaded onto APs and AKs and on their way. In addition the first of my major AP and AK convoys is about to reach Singapore and that should speed up the evacuation significantly.

Things at Nanning look good. If Nanning falls then I may reverse this thrust and head into Vietnam in order to hit the HI and Resources just across the border and rob Japan of their production. It'll add a few militia divisions but it is something I'm considering so long as I can put together a strong enough punch to make suitable heaway once I cross the border.

And Nanning is looking pretty good for the Chinese Army. Good, this'll give me a bit more operational freedom in southern China and I can capitalise upon that.

P.s. For those of you wondering what has happened to the Japanese replenishment convoy my carriers have been shadowing for the past 4 days... it has been socked in by bad weather EVERY day and so my carriers have been unable to attack it. I'm continuing to try though and generally end up within 1 to 3 hexes of it at day's end. Once I lose sight of KB then I will have to sprint away but so long as I know KB is hovering north-west of Pearl Harbour more then 16 hexes from my CVs I am safe enough.

So, after a week of combat about 450 Allied planes have been destroyed ( including 220 on the ground) while 220some Japanese planes have been destroyed including over 100 of their naval planes ( thus wiping out their naval pilot pool). In addition 40 Allied ships are confirmed destroyed while 30 Japanese ships ( including 1 CL, 3 DDs, 1 ML and 2 SS) are known to have sunk.

Overall things are going reasonably well. China is developing nicely, the Pacific will be the scene of reasonably heavy fighting as the Japanese expand and a series of strongpoints is being set up in the DEI. In addition a few nice spoiling attacks have gone in or are developing.

I may, of course, be wrong.

you are correct the main thing is to be flexible. In every game I adopt a different strategy re Singapore. I have tried fortress johore, fortress Singapore, evac to Java and cling on, evac to Timor and dig in the key thing is to be unpredictable and try and knock off Japanese prep points

2. Burma... This is another completely expendable arena. I don't intend to push any Chinese forces into it. I intend to have it make a nuisance of itself and then fold very quickly once the Japanese attack it seriously.

Aye holding Burma is tough to do as the SEAC CHinese Divs are neeeded in China if the Japanese are pressuring it

If all else fails in China pull everyhing back to Chungking and settle in for a long siege

Unfortunately while there were over 200 Japanese planes at Kuching ( including over 50 Bettys and 50 Zeroes) my naval bombardment destroyed only a single Zero with its bombardment. It looks like the destroyer and transports sunk on the run-in robbed my bombardment TF of most of its ops points and ammunition and thus the bombardment itself was disappointing. Unfortunately the results won't be worth the loss of the BB now, if the bombardment had succeeded I would have considered it a good trade. In response I have split many of my transport TF from Singapore in order to try to draw some of the heat from the Revenge TF.

AVG and the Buffalo squadrons are rapidly being worn down to nothingness but are taking a good toll of the Zeroes and Bettys arrayed against them. Fully 58 Zeroes and 63 Bettys have been downed so far ( in addition to just under 40 Vals and Kates) which has made quite a dent in the naval pilot pool ( one of the japanese critical weaknesses I have identified and intend to focus on). I need to cover my forces at Singapore for 1 more day and then I think I'll pull my aerial forces out. I have succesfully evacuated 27,000 men to Palembang already and have another 15,000 men on the high seas at the moment. Similar evacuations are underway near Molok as isolated dutch forces are being withdrawn into Soerabaja. The assault values and fortification levels of Palembang, Soerabaja and Batavia are coming along nicely.

The loss of all these tankers is quite a major victory for Allied forces as it forces the Japanese to risk their AOs in support of KB. Once risked I can get at them. The cost will be very high but the limitations on Japanese range which will pursue will be very much worth it.

Attacking force 3039 troops, 43 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 70

Defending force 0 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 0

Allied max assault: 40 - adjusted assault: 7

Japanese max defense: 0 - adjusted defense: 1

Allied assault odds: 7 to 1 (fort level 3)

Allied forces CAPTURE Bangkok base !!!

And halve the HI at Bangkok [:D]. Unfortunately it looks like there's a Japanese division only 60 miles away so the proposed nuisance attack into Vietnam is scrubbed. Time to pull back a little methinks.

Well, that's that settled then.

It looks like your knowledge of the Japanese forces from your previous game and what you perceive to be weaknesses is bearing fruit for you. If he leaves a supposed "rear" area base undefended, you are making him pay. [:D]
What plans do you have for the 3 US CV's?? [&:]

Hi, Darn I wish I was Japan. This AAR makes my mouth water. Now I agree that it is best for Alled player to fight back where and when he can but not commit sucide doing it.

I think the expansion period as Japan is my strongest suit in playing WITP. I don't use any exploits and restrict myself beyond even most house rules. I don't try to win auto victory I try to secure the DEI and prepare for the war following expansion. I let the allied player decide what occurs in China (I will never go west of the RR or attempt to capture any base that begins in Chinese control unless the Chinese force me onto the offensive. ) I do not move any Kwantung units without paying PP. I do not go north or Tavoy before capture of Singapore. No 2nd strikes at PH.
No Japanese TF will move closer then 4 hexes from enemy base where it is going to conduct a landing on turn 1 unless Allied base is within 4 hexes of TF's origin.

I'm not retreating, I'm attacking in a different direction!
