50-man Historical Replay Rosters

Post by KG Erwin »

On a lark, I set up a real-player career association, and chose 50-man rosters. Dang, it worked like a charm, and the remaining slots were auto-filled by fictional scrubs.

I had assumed (incorrectly), that a historical roster association HAD to be the 35-man default. [:o]

Just goes to show what a little experimenting can do for you. [;)]

Hmm, can you confirm, and indicate version?

With v1.00, which was the last time I tried that setup, the remaining slots were filled by *quality* fictional players, not 10-point scrubs; if that has been changed recently, I missed it in the changelists!

As of 1.19, when I last created a historical career with 50-man rosters, the rosters were filled out with quality fictional players. I actually didn't mind the fictional players, since none of them worked out to be superstars and the few records that they did set were eventually taken over by historical players.

Alright -- if you guys wanna check out the 1946 Real Roster 50-man template, here it is:

http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=D27D53665D66EB0C

After I saved this, and at the conclusion of spring training, I went back to my chosen team (the Pirates, of course), and started some aggressive trading.   The 1946 Pirates have gone after youngsters, and shed themselves of excellent but declining players.

Historical note; do you know how the Pirates got their name?  Well, they were called the Alleghenys in the 1880s,  but they managed to steal (pirate) away a player that was contracted to another team.  The name stuck, and that's how I'll operate with this alternate-history team.  [;)]

Is it cheating the AI? Not necessarily.   Look, I basically traded away my entire starting rotation (Rip Sewell, Fritz Ostermueller, Ken Heintzelman) and some star everyday players (including All-Star 2B  Frankie Gustine).

What I got in return?  Red Schoendienst, Enos Slaughter, Dave Philley, Eddie Lopat and Jack Kramer.

Scruples? What scruples?  It's the Pirates way.  [:D]

I would also like to know how you got it to auto-fill with fictional scrubs.  I had very good fictional players, one had a 100 power rating!, and I ended up force retiring all good fictional players before the draft.  That took a while!  If I could get it to  auto-fill with fictional scrubs, that would save me a ton of time.

Man, I haven't looked over all the rosters yet, so d/l the template and check it out. The 1946 real-player pool had 860 available, so there should not be too many scrubs.

However, you really have to check the distribution of minor-leaguers in your chosen team. You don't want your AAA squad clogged up, so some manual redistibution is neccessary. With my Pirates, I released a few older players and signed promising youngsters.

One thing to keep in mind -- while I set team affinity ON, I set financials OFF. I really have no idea of how this will play out in successive seasons --it's an experiment.

PS: In looking over the rosters, I don't see any super-scrubs. If Shaun changed something without telling us, in this case, well, bless his heart. [&o]
