Best Missions or databases

Post by Tomus »

Hi all,

There seems to be bewildering array of databases, missions, scenarios, websites, designers etc. And I find it all a bit baffling. [:D]

Any chance of some non partisan recommendations on missions or databases to d/l?

Thanks Tom

What you are finding baffling? Can you elaborate?

I'll try to shed some light on the Scenario / Database requirement with a simple analogy. I apologize if this example is blazingly obvious. [;)]

Imagine, if you will, that a Scenario is a document that someone writes using a specific database [or Dictionary]. If someone else goes to play/read that Scenario/Document and uses a different database/dictionary from the one used to write it, he is going to have problems. It would like trying to translate an English document with a Russian dictionary. Therefore, every scenario must be played with the database that it was originally written with or else you can get some spectacular problems. [:(]

Most scenario files have the suffix *.SCN to denote a Harpoon3 scenario file and, AFAIK, most of the sites specify the database required for each scenario posted to them. You just have to go through the process of matching them up.

If you are looking for scenario recommendations, can you specify what you seek?
Are you looking for some ASW / ASuW / AAW type scenarios?
Big complex ones?
Basic novice-friendly ones?
A certain time period?
Geographic area?

Thanks for the reply hermanhum.

It was basically which ones would you guys recommend are the best ones. I personally prefer Sovs V Nato type scenarios. The more obscure ones seem to leave me a touch cold. Also Atlantic/European theatre as well...

You know Tom Clancy type stuff.

Okay! Now I know what you are looking for. [:)]

There are some great Russian/Soviet vs. NATO scenarios and battlesets. I'll list a few of them:

Freek Schepers writes the 21Century Oil War Battleset with the PlayersDB
Suomenlinna,
Pacific,
Atlantic,
Barentz,
Indian Ocean,
Malakka, and
True North Strong and Free, to name a few.

Dave Steinmeyer has a number of excellent scenarios built on the original GDW Harpoon Paper rules and set along the Cold War era.
Baltic Tide,
Lone Wolf,
Power Sweep, and
Incoming Mail with the PlayersDB

Klaus Behrmann writes an excellent World War Three in 1989 - The Wall battleset with the DB2k

Quinton Van Zyl does another good battleset of World War Three in 1987 battleset with the DB2k

Ragnar Emsoy has a great battleset of World War Three in 1985 with the DB2k

Be careful to match the Database with each scenario or you will have problems. Good hunting! [8D]
