New Armor Icons for WIR

Post by Rich Dionne »

Ever since I put out my alternative aircraft icon set for WIR, I've been wanting to get to the armor. Well, I finally found a little time to finish them up and post them at my website. I've rebuilt them from scratch and tried to adhere to approximate relative sizing for each (I never realized what a beast the T-35 was!). Here is what the two icon sets look like:

You can download the new icons at:

Hope you like em!

Great work!

I've been making my own icons, but do not have the eye for color and detail you do. Very well done and thank you for making them.

Nice work indeed.

I'm looking forward to giving these puppies a run.

That should work. As long as the game is started with one of the modified ob files that come with Riche's graphics, you and your partner should have no problems. Note that both of you would need to be using the new graphics, one can't use the standard stuff while the other uses Rich's stuff. The guy using the standard graphics would notice images being used for the wrong equipment and other oddities.

Thanks Guys!

By the way. I forgot to include the spreadsheet listing the icon slot changes I made to the armor and aircraft. I just uploaded the files to my website again with this file included.

They'll be included, but not as the *default* graphics. At some point down the road, I suspect the Matrix team will vote or something to decide to make them the default graphics, but this is not really that important, so we're a long way from that.

Fabulous work, Rich! Its a joy to play with these icons, I'm currently having a serious WIR relapse!

Regarding the Pz-III icons, perhaps it would be better to have icon 22 represent the Pz-IIIj as well, since the Pz-IIIj in WIR is the long cannon variant that would have been virtually identical to the Pz-IIIm. You probably saw a picture of an early Pz-IIIj, with a short cannon. These entered service around mid 1941, but are represented in WIR by the Pz-IIIh.

The Pz-IIIg and h models were also virtually undistinguishable and should have the same icon.

Good comments Yogi.

Looking at the attack values of the Pz-III's in the game, I agree with your analysis. I will update the Pz-IIIg to icon 5, and the Pz-IIIj to icon 22.

While we're on the subject, for you military experts, how many dots should the infantry "squad" icon have? I've had some comments on this, varying from 1 - 3 dots. My books indicate a squad has one dot, but apparently other sources indicate one dot as a team, and 2 dots as a squad. Also, when a squad is lost in the game, it looks like 50 men are lost, which is more platoon size. I assume that the 50 losses include extra personnel found in a division, beyond those in an individual squad?

I designed boardgames for a while years back so i'll dump some of my opinions on you.
I see the 'squad' in Wir as actually a platoon.

A squad(9-12 men) in my eyes would be two dots (1/3 of a WiR 'squad') and a WiR 'squad' would be 3 dots (a platoon)
Then upwards, a company is one bar, a batalion is 2 bars...exct
The 50 men in a Wir Platoon would be 3-4 squads + platoon Command and platoon mortar element or MG element and such. Rounded out to 50 across the board is reasonable at this level of play.

Nick,

I checked the original version of WIR, and at that time, a lost squad counted for 10 men. I think this value was multiplied by 5 in the current version to better reflect the total personnel present in a division (over 12,000 instead of 2,400). The number of squads in a division is still listed as 243, which in a pure triangular formation (3 squads x 3 platoons x 3 companies x 3 battalions x 3 regiments = 243 squads), would indicate that these are indeed squads, and not platoons.

I'm still not sure which is correct, but I should certainly bump the symbol to at least 2 dots.

Regards,

Rich

The icons look excellent. They really do, but I do have one question.

How come they look a bit crunched, for the lack of a better word. Almost as if the new graphics are a tad larger than the originals and it resizes it to get it to fit. Does this happen to anyone else?

Crunched sounds strange...

Are they crunched vertically or horizontally? They should look pretty similar to the ones shown in the first post, except perhaps about 10% taller; WIR does make images a bit taller in the game.

Hmmm... You know that's probably what is happening.

I was playing the Germans in mid '41 and I was looking an early StuG III and it looked a little tall.
