March of the Penguins: Onime vs. Fabertong

Post by Onime No Kyo »

Greetings to you, fans of death and mindless carnage. For your reading pleasure, allow me to present this AAR. This will be the first PBEM for me and 1500th for Fabertong, so at last check, Las Vegas had me at 100000000:1.

The House Rules are as follows:

Stock scenario 15.
Sub doctrines OFF
Player Defined Upgrades ON

Faber was going to give me a break and allow me to ignore LCU HQ restrictions but I declined. If I'm going to be beaten to a pulp, I will be beaten fair and square. The one little caveat we worked out is a 30-day grace period on HQ changes. A unit may be moved out of its area of operations and remain there for 30 days without HQ change. However, said unit is not allowed to plan for any base outside its assigned area and must be either removed or have its HQ changed at the end of the 30-day grace period. I feel this is a good balance between strict HQ rules and the silly historical HQs with which units arrive.

The AP rule is in effect. Any LCU must be transported on an AP-type ship unless that unit is of the ARM, ART or CD type. Present exceptions are units that are loaded on AKs on turn1. Japan will be released from this rule at a late war date to be agreed upon later when its shipping becomes scarce and it is not longter able to accomodate troop transports on AKs only.

Now, I'm not a big fan of posting CR text. Instead, I will summarize the action after every turn or several turns, hopefully without letting out too much priviliged information. Hopefully, Faber will have the time to do the same.

All are welcome to post comments, questions, jokes and jeers. Enjoy the show.

I just checked the line at Ice Station Zebra and the line is closer to 500:1 and Fabertong has already placed a bet of 1000 Sards( Sardines)

The APs rule will in time make it interesting. Good luck and have fun.

Never invite a Penguin over

Post by Onime No Kyo »

So about a week ago, I invited Faber over to my Pearl Harbor HQ for blinzes and milk. Yesterday, instead of coming over bearing something for tea, Faber shows up with 6 carriers and blasts my blinzes and my battleships to smithereens.

"Of course you know, this means war" -Bugs Bunny

Here are the results of turn1.

China (was treated as an existinng theather or turn1, so that all orders were valid)

Faber bombed Yenen and Changsha. Over Changsha he was intercepted by 2 I-153c's of which one was lost and the second damaged.

Hong Kong was bombed followed by an attack by the 38th Division. The attackers failed to penetrate the forward defenses, losing ~500 men.

Burma

Japanese troops are coming ashore at Kuantan. The landings are supported by 2 BCs and several cruisers. Kuantan, Khota Bharu, Alor Setar and Singapore were bombed. Over Singapore, Japanese planes were engaged by 12 of what Mandrake calls "beautiful Brewsters" of which half were shot down for negligible losses to the Japanese.

In reply, Kongo was struck with 2 bombs, one from a Hudson, the other from a Vildebeest, both of which merrilly bounced off her turret, flew waaaay up in the air and reportedly filled several cuddly forest creatures on shore.

A CVL TF consisting of Zuiho, Hosho and at least one BC was located about 150 miles from Singapore. This TF was attacked by Swordfish and Blens with no hits scored.

DEI

Faber is landing at Kuching, Miri, Brunei and Jessleton as well as Kendari and Ambonia. Looks like the fight for the DEI will be short and bloody.

PI

Besides landing at 4 points in the North, Fabers troops are also coming ashore on Jolo.

Cap over Clark Field was decimated, giving a much worse account of themselves than the British in Singapore.

His BBs are supporting the landings at San Marcelino. Which is good because at least I know where they are.

Pearl Harbor

Casualties here were predictable. The KB has tagged every battleship in port as well as several cruisers. Nothing sank although several ships might. I would bet on Faber sticking around for a couple days more.

He lost about 30 aircraft for about twice that many damaged.

But its the loss of my blinzes that really hurts.

Other points

Japanese forces are landing at undefended Wewak and Lae on PNG. Rabaul is apparently left alone for now. Hundsons from Rabaul bombed the Lae invasion force but recorded no hits.

Troops are being landed on Guam, Tarawa and Nauru.

After a short and uninspired fight Wake has fallen.

Now the fun really starts. Stay tuned, this aught to be good.

The guy with the Japanese screen name is playing the Allies? Might get a little confusing . . . but anyone who quotes Bugs Bunny is the man to root for!
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

From the look of things Roosevelt and Hal Stark share that sentiment. [8|]

I would take offense at vile penguin....if it wasn't so true.......

Turn 1 was an unusual affair.....with no ships reported sunk at all...........having said that....this is not a lunacy game....only a PH port attack allowed turn 1.....so Onime....has force Z ,all the Dutch cruisers, all the American subs....the Brit. destroyers at HK to play with..........what mischief can he cause?

PH............did OK but no sinkings........

Landings in Malaya....Kuantan........best spot in my opinion for the Japs. to land in game terms.........

I'm trying an all new set up.........so we shall see how she goes.........I'll fill you in as we go...

China.......not telling.....
Burma......not telling......
ETC...ETC...

The only real gamey elements to this turn 1.....for which I apologise.......Is the invasion of Kendari......Dutch would have seen them coming........and Jolo......even Dugout Doug.....would have seen them coming.......but I have a sentimental weakness for these bases.......

I feel I'm not a bad opponent for someones first PBEM...........I mean how good can I be .....I'm a penguin.

Would have certainly noticed. The Khota Bharu TF was historically spotted about 3-5 days out. and just as there the detection of the Jolo and kendary TFs would have culminated in a diplomatic note of protest (perhaps even a strenuous protest).

I suspect that the US would have Bombed any Japs heading for Jolo....and the Dutch may well have moved some Surface forces to Kendari....they have come late....but........

Penguins were banned from Sandhurst in 1906 after the infamous Flipper affair......and obviously the less said about that the better.......
