Unsupported Color Depth

Post by Terost »

[&:] I just installed the Harpoon 3 ANW and at all video settings (800x600,1042x768 and 1280x1024) the harpoon.exe displays a error message "unsupported color depth". I tried both 16 bit and 32 bit color depth and still got the same error.
My computer is a Athlon 64 3200+, 1.5 GB RAM, 258 MB ATI Radeon X800 video card, Win XP Pro and a 300 GB hard drive. Why won't this Harpoon 3 run on high-end computer systems? Do I have to install Harpoon 3 on an older computer?

If the error messat you are getting is the same as this:

Out of date video drivers

I wouldn't worry too much about it. [8D]

This error code has popped up from time to time in the past, and I've been digging in the bug tracking database to find it, with no luck so far.

But IIRC, it had to do with forcing the ANW installation over an old H3 one.

Will keep looking. I also recall that for the most part it did not affect the ability of the game to run.

Thks, I forgot about the older Harpoon 3 which is in a separate folder. I will remove the older H3 folder and uninstall the current H3 ANW and search for any related keys, run Registry Mechanic and do a clean install of H3 ANW.

I don't think that it is necessary.  I run both H3.6.3 and ANW at the same time on my computer.  I've had that message show up, but it has no effect on me.

Personally, I run both versions because the current problems in ANW prevent me from fully enjoying solitaire play.  I play ANW in Multi-player and enjoy it very much, but the solitaire bugs are game killers, IMO.  So, I play H3 against the computer and ANW against human opponents.

Of course, that is just this particular player's way of doing things.  [8D]

Are you running H3.6.3?  ANW v3.7.0? or the new ANW 3.7.1 patch?

Okay, I am going to launch a total shot into the dark.  You might want to move (don't delete) the Harpoon3.ini file from your ANW folder.  Just put it someplace else for the moment.  Then try and re-start ANW.  This will create a brand new Harpoon3.ini file for you.  I, too, had a bit of difficulty after installing the patch.  [;)]

In order to best help you, can you provide even more details?  Exactly what used to work and what doesn't work now?  Did you install your patch right over your pre-existing ANW folder?

If you can, please go through what is happening step-by-step.

Hi Again,

First thanks for the help.

You might want to move (don't delete) the Harpoon3.ini file from your ANW folder.  Just put it someplace else for the moment.  Then try and re-start ANW.  This will create a brand new Harpoon3.ini file for you.  I, too, had a bit of difficulty after installing the patch.  [;)]

This is a no go. The program made a new .ini file and still crashes.

In order to best help you, can you provide even more details?  Exactly what used to work and what doesn't work now?  Did you install your patch right over your pre-existing ANW folder?

So what happened:

I had styleXP on my laptop, and I downloaded a program from stardock called object desktop. Both programs are skinning programs with themes etc. I ran Harpoon the day before i uninstalled styleXP and installed objectdesktop and it ran fine. Now I keep getting the unsupported error when i try and run it now. So I'm not sure what happened

I'm not familiar with either object desktop or StyleXP.  At this point, all I can suggest is you might try a full re-installation from scratch.  Just be sure that you run the "UnInstall" utility that comes with ANW to ensure that you get rid of everything properly.  Don't just delete the folder (like I did my first time around)  [;)]

Hopefully, one of the AGSI staff members can help you run it down.
