"Community" project/add-on

Post by GoodGuy »

Well, I haven't had time to verifiy scale/existence of these battles (for Leros, Kos, Rodos, and a 4th isle), but wouldn't that be an ideal community add-on for COTA?

http://www.battlefront.co.nz/Article.asp?ArticleID=411

I was working on a fictional scenario (the isle Chios, which had to be divided into 3 scenarios), but since it would be fictional (as the historic landings weren't spectacular enough, with a small landing force using trawlers/civil vessels mostly), I was thinking about a more spectacular set of maps, like the germans retaking these isles (which were occupied by the italians, with the Italian troops being in the process of changing sides, after they surrendered to the Allies in 1943). The Brits sent a force to support the Italians, while the Germans sent forces to shut the backdoor.
Obviously it would be a bigger project (no matter whether it would be historically accurate or not), so it would be interesting to gather 3-4 ppl to get this thing together. [:)]

Just don't know if 1941 estabs would really create an ideal base for the creation.

GoodGuy,

I'd recommend giving leaving it up for another week or two to give people time to respond.

Actually battles for these islands would be good to do. They are bitesize projects on which users can cut their teeth. The scenarios don't need to be huge to be fun to play.

Goodguy: If I were you, I would just do it myself. The scenario editor is piss easy to use....actually its childs play.

Honestly, you don't need 3-4 people to do it, just give it a whirl and find out for yourself.

GoodGuy,

This is a very good idea.
These small islands offer plenty of opportunities for airborne and seaborne actions. I had a similar idea, but in 1941, with the occupation by the Germans of some of those islands. They were mostly undefended. What-if they were properly defended ?

For your scenarios, I think the Axis/Allies nations are fixed : so the Italians cannot be on the Allies side. Is it right ?

BTW: did you take contact with El Savior from The Airborne Depot Web site to host your Cologne scenario ?

Cheers,

JeF.

I don't have much time to verify/research the OOB atm, so I would stick to setting up the maps. Also, I'm halfway familiar with the SM, as I've created a map for HttR already. Thnx for the encouraging words, tho. [;)]
The call was meant to get a set of scenarios (Kos = first battle, Leros = main battle, maybe additional"what-if" scenario for Kos, or a fict. landing on Rhodos) going more quickly (than 1 guy with limited time could do), to have a mini custom-campaign b4 BFTB hits the shelf.

@ JeF : 1) Nah, didn't feel like contacting him, as it's not 100% finished (due to lack of time).

2) Well, the Italians were in the process of changing sides. While they evacuated some vital ships of their fleet (to North Africa and Malta), Italian ground forces in Italy got the order to disarm (lol) or stop German troops whereever possible. In fact, local Italian commanders let Germans walk through as a good amount of them fought with them in Russia, or, where the Italians dared to stop them, they got enforced to grant free travel and got disarmed themselfs, when the Germans were moving to their new defense line.

In turn, I guess the Italians on these isles co-operated with the Brits halfway, but they were badly supplied/equipped. Besides a few guns (coastal defenses) and a good number of ancient arty pieces on Leros, they had several thousand Inf troops on there, but I doubt that they could provide much value for the actual fighting.
That said, the Italians would have to be on the Allied side, but I guess that's fixed = not possible. Maybe someone is able to give a hint for a possible solution here.

Interesting. I just checked and confirmed that at the moment there is no way to assign an estab that belongs to the Axis to an Allied unit. And that is for good reasons, which I won't go into right now. mmm...not sure right now how to handle this one...I'll think on it.

Sorry I've been tied up with the patch. I won't be able to get to this until it's out.

Well, Hoplomachia has picked up my idea, it seems, but I guess he didn't include Italian forces on the map (haven't downloaded his files yet). So, for a "final" version of his Leros map (in addition to picking the right estabs -> '43/'44 ones), the Italians would have to be able to change sides. While the garrison of 5000+ Italian troops (with only around half of them being armed military personnel) might have not added much combat-value, especially since the Allied troops did not trust them -  so communication was poor, but this amount still might have added to the pool of potential opposition for the Germans, in this campaign.
Changing sides would be interesting for what-if scenarios too.

Any news now?

Yes GoodGuy you've been patient. Take a bow. I'd like to reward your for it but alas I have not given this any more thought. It didn't make the cut on our criticals list for BFTB I'm afraid and if I try and add it now I'll be in big trouble from the Panther Prowlers who all swore an oath not to all me to keep adding items/features.

It's actually trickier than you might think as we use the list of estabs for the intel and it would require special handling to ensure we didn't end up with a swag of stupid looking intel reports. For now it's not going to get addressed until after BFTB.

We did - and as you can observe we're monitoring every move you make. Though you might be able to sneak it by tomorrow as it's Ray's turn to babysit you and he's easily bribed with virtual Chardonay [:D]

Well it's Shiraz rather than Chardonnay but in principle, you're right.
That was until I woke up to the fact that all the promised bug hunting prizes to the bunnies were REALLY virtual. My little face has been pressed to the windowpane hoping to see the postman with a case from Oz ...

As for new features for BFTB, please don't ask Arjuna, he's so susceptible to people asking nicely, that if you do we won't see the game released till <insert your own month, year> [;)]

My main problem in life : being right in principle, but not actually [:D]

And you've never seen him staggering by with an half-empty bottle in his hand ? Strange. I receive my cases regularly. Their quality is only so-so but I'm keeping them for when you come over again as you seem to prefer quantity over quality [;)]
