Zeta16 vs Ramjet - To the Bitter End

Post by Ramjet »

Zeta16 and I just finished a stock game we started last December. Game completed on 06 June 1945 due to Allied Decisive Victory. Zata16 was the Allies, me the Japanese. Congradulations to Matt!

We played with few house rules as we really didn't need them. Neither of us did anything too gamey and we never had any issues or points of contention.

Would like to note some Japanese observations and lessons learned, Matt will chime in later some lessons learned from the Allies.

1. Don't attack Pearl Harbor repeatedly. I lost way too many pilots on the attack.

2. The most power weapon in the Japanese Military are their Heavy Cruisers. I hit him with numberous high-speed night attacks with awsome results. Not until Radar was common on his ships were they able to go toe to toe with my CA's.

3. My economy was in great shape. I took the Dutch East Indies as soon as possible and starte cranking out oil and resources and transporting them to Japan. I had more fuel and supply then I ever needed. Even with him blockading me for all of 1945 and stratigic bombing me, my economy was in great shape. I can build as many aircraft as I want, just don't have any pilots to fly them.

4. The most limiting item is number of replacement pilots. Japan cannot afford to get into a prolonged airwar with the Allies, they will bleed you white.

5. I wiped out the British Fleet, but it really didn't get my anywhere.

6. I made great gains in China, but that didn't do much for me either.

Will post more later, wanted to get this started

It sound like the IJN had some sterling moments -- but I can't help noticing the surrender happened before the historical date. What were the major ways in which Zeta16 earned his victory points?
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

His bomber force was unstoppable. He earned massive points from strategic bombing, and had retaken many cities in SE Asia and the PI. I held my own with ship, aircraft, and army losses. His victory was only a couple of months early, not like I stank it up... I think most Allied players should end the war sooner than they did historically because no Allied player is idiotic enough to persue a strategy like MacArthur's.

hi Ramjet... i know this is a new AAR, but i wondering if you could/wish/have enough time and goodwill to make more detailed overview (so far we saw only one, IIRC)
.
When did you lost KB? Which route did Zeta took in his offensive? What about your airforce... etc?

It seems that Zeta was quite slow with advance?

Well this AAR will be for the rematch. In our first game I went from Noumea up that way towards Rabaul (mid/late 43) but passed it to the north. I also took Miline Bay(43) back from him has he took that early and went up the coast towards Wewak, in doing that I by passed Pm which he had also taken. I also advanced towards Molaep(late 43/early44) and those Islands for a thrust there. In another move I went for Parisomjima? and took that but we battled for all most a year or more before I expelled his troops and he won many surface battles there. When I was advancing from Wewak(43 into 44) I started a little advance from Darwin and these two forces meet at Kendari(early to mid 44) and from there I went North with out going West. I left DEI alone as was thinking he had a lot of troops there and did not feel like a long ground war. Earlier he tried to Invade India by sea at Diamond Harbor(mid 42) and that area. There is where i lost the British fleet, but they caused some damage and help me cause a withdraw of his forces from India. So In mid to late 43 I took the old British base on the coast and then Adaman Islands(early 44) and started a move in to Burma. I then went from Adaman and Nicobar to Sabang(mid44). Then down Burma in to the Mandalay and Ragoon(late 44) area and a few landing at places like Victoria Point then down to Singapore(4/45) and another force towards Bangkok(4/45). From Kendari I moved towards Paulau(mid44) and Utilhli and then to the Marianas(mid44) for my bombers. I also moved towards Davao(early to mid 44) then into Legesi? towards Minila (9/44) and Clark Field. From there to Formosa(early 45) which was lightly defended where I got more bases to bomb Japan, and then on towards Okinowa (2 or 3/45).

During the game I tried to land where he was lightly defended, and always made sure I had aircover where ever I went. PP points are agreat key, yep I lost a lot surface battles but they protected my landings. The key was fighting where I could at the start and not giving in unless I had some where to fall back to that was better. Aircover is the Key and land in force if you want a base. We never stacked airfields over the 50 per size limits which helps the game a lot and tried to play the right way. It was fun now I get to take my licks as Japan.

Just sent the first turn so things will start soon. I play a basic first turn and do not try to get fance and unrealistic. I try to do this in all of games, but at times things happen. So I keep all update with in reason as we are both posting, and will try to keep all update on over loses in planes and ships as I did in AAR's with freeboy and WiTPdude. So to all get ready for a good game.

edited for dates, which may be right or wrong.

We are playing stock. Here are the rules sent to me

1. Aircraft cannot fly any missions on the turn they transfer to a base except fighters can fly CAP in their base hex.

2. Can only upgrade bombers to a bomber with the same number of enginene: 1E to 1E, 2E to 2E, 4E to 4E. This prevents the US from having heavy bombers all over the place and the Japanese from upgrading their dive bombers to Sally's & Helens.

3. Carrier capable units can only fly off CV/CVL/CVE's, not operate or fly onto them. They can only be loaded in port. Basically you can ferry your Carrier Capable units with carriers to prevent them from becomming 100% damages, but you cannot operate carrier capable units off carriers. I think this will affect both sides equally. However, if a CV sinks and you don't lose those "Carier Trained" squadrons, you can operate them off any CV/CVL/CVE unit.

4. On the first turn, the Allies can only change course and speed of their underway task forces, otherwise they are in a pre-war footing on a sazy December Sunday morning.

5. The Japanese cannot target any underway task forces (they didn't know where the US carriers were).

6. The Japanese cannot attack Singapore Port, only the airfield.

7. I'm not a fan of the one port attack only, but you shouldn't use all your Nells' and Betty's to attack Manila. You should only be able to use less than half of them. Their primary mission was Clark Airfield. But if you hit Pearl, Manila, and Hong Kong I won't complain, but you shouldn't be able to hit the US or the Dutch East Indies.

I also try to keep planes at a base to a limit due to size.

12/8/41

Well the second day saw none of planes fly against PH. I capured a few northern PI bases and got a few torp hits on PoW and Repluse as they tried to reach the landings north of Singapore. Not a very exciting day but more fun is to come.

That seams to happen alot. Most of my games have had a second day strike never happen. Glad to see you back in the AAR business.

Yeah, I have not visted the boards much this summer, but school is about to start and it gives me some thing to do between yelling at the students. Also to it seems lately the talk on this board has not been real good and seems like a lot of whinning and so on.

Just did another turn and I hit PH and a surface taskforce. Lost some more pilots, but at this point I am not worried as in my game with freeboy I have a plan to replace pilots and it has worked for me before. I did sink Repluse with a bunch of DD's and that was nice and I captured Tarawa this last turn. The American carriers hit my 2 ship task force at Wake and sunk one of them. I should be making my move towards Singapore in the next turns, then on to who knows where [:'(]

Here is the combat report from 12/9/42. Ok start by me, no ships have shown up sunk from PH yet, so that is disapointing. I also forgot that the taskforces set up by the game have very little supply for the Japanse troops, so I need to work on that.

I won't go into detail about the 10th as not much happened, except the Japanese took Makin.

I think Matt covered most of our first game. Basically my army couldn't be everywhere, so he hit spots in a hoping campaign and that really did the trick. He didn't even take Rabaul from me, nor Midway, but took Shanghai!? I still had the Akagi, Kaga, Hiryu, and Soryu, but had worthless pilots and my KB was completely useless due to loss of pilots. I sent them to Midway, and even made an attempt to attack Pearl Harbor in 1945 but he had too much air power still there. My biggest mistake was bleeding my Naval airforce against the British. I wiped out the British fleet, but never recovered from the air losses. His airforce was his biggest assett, my cruisers were for me. Every time he invaded somewhere, I hit them with a "Savo Island" type attack and did some serious damage. I got cute once and over extended myself and his CV group cought my BB's in the open and waxed them.

In our current game, since Matt's opening move was historical and non-gamey, I countered. I "role played" as the British and sortied "Task Force Z" to Kota Bharu as the British did historicaly. They got creamed. I am also sticking around Manila as the Americans did historically. They also got creamed. It wasn't until Dive Bombers attacked that the US started leaving Manila. Admiral Hart didn't leave until December 29th, and he left on a submarine. I think the whole idea of the US running out of the PI from the get-go is too unrealistic. The Allies need to suffer some defeats, even some disasters, to stick to a role play type game. If Matt sticks to his realistic game plan, I'll do the same. I really don't care about victory points, but prefer and more historical based game.

well the 11 and 12 were quiet expect for the Zuiho catching the Houston trying to make a break for PH or the West coast and was sunk over two days with air attacks. On of my subs also ran into 4 or 5 dd's around Tarawa, so I am not sure if a carrier is around there, so we may have to find out.

The 13th of december came and the unstoppable Japanese captured Khota Bharu and Tuguegerao in the PI today as the Japanese army seems to unstopappable at this point. Other than that things are in motion for my next moves some that I have never done in any of my games as Japan before.

Well we have gotten to 12/23/42 and not much out of the ordinary has happened. The Japanese have taken Lingayen,Hollandia, Tavoy, and Victoria Point. The Japanese are also attacking Naga and Yenen and Have almost taken Hong Kong. They are also on the move towards Alor Star. Allied subs have hit a number of Japanese transports while the Japanese escorts have got very little hits in return. Operation Cake will happen in the next day or two and Operation Slow Flow will begin in due time. Other than that I don't think I sunk any thing worth anything in PH, and I have no clue where the Allied CV's are.
