RE: Girlfriend vs Wargaming

<t> Like Skrewball, I met my GF playing games. It was backgammon - not a computer game, but still a game. She doesn't gripe about WITP, as long as I don't go into marathon sessions and play until 4am. We have "computer free days" now and then. And I make dinner, which helps alot (I'm a better cook ...

RE: Strange, dude... Strange...

Yeah, that may be it. I know that asphalt runways built up on permafrost are sometimes painted white to reduce thaw penetration and resulting subsidence of the runway surface. That would be true at Thule, but isn't Keflavik built on rock?

and many could not successfully return to their launch submarine

Hard enough finding ones way back to a flattop. Imagine looking for the submarine while praying to the pagan god of fuel guages.

RE: Movement of Oil/Resources

My experience has been that oil and resource movements can be a bit quirky between neighboring ports. Matsuyama and Takamatsu are left dry now and then, for example.

RE: Modifying which bases are malarial

Slightly off-topic to this discussion of game mechanics, but the total number of man-days lost to Malaria in the SWPAC in 1943 alone was accounted to be above 994,0000. (16 Army History, Sum/Fall 2003)

RE: Modifying which bases are malarial

<t> Andrew: Found this in an Australian Malaria Register report from the 1990's:<br/>
<br/>
"Australia was certified free of malaria by WHO in 1981, but it is believed that environmental conditions in Australia north of latitude 19°S still favour the transmission of malaria were parasites to be ...

RE: Modifying which bases are malarial

<t> Australia has been considered a non-malarial area for some years now, but was it effectively so in 1942?<br/>
<br/>
I know that the Australians were doing extensive malaria research (especially on atebrine) in Cairns during the war; Cairns was considered to have endemic malaria at the time ...

a BB that sprung a leak
?!?!?!?!?!

Did it just sort of happen (spontaneous disappearance of the rivets), or did one of the crew pull the cork?

RE: Japanese Use of Barges

<t> Thanks for the info. I guess I will move my Home Islands and Philippine islands barges to contested areas.<br/>
<br/>
Port Moresby looks like it will be a chore to keep in supply and fuel.<br/>
<br/>
Does anyone playing Japanese actually build more of the AG types? Is it worth the supply?</t>

Japanese Use of Barges

<t> Still futzing about against the AI, learning the game, I wonder what other Japan players do with their Barges.<br/>
<br/>
Japan starts with about 40 of them. I am using mine in three groups, ferrying supplies around the Philippines, from Rabaul to bases in nearby New Guinea and the Solomans ...

RE: Slightly OT... who here speaks chinese and or Japanese?

<t> I speak English!<br/>

Reasonable at French, but I learned in Belgium and West Africa, so my strange accent causes metropolitan French speakers to look at me with an expression that I can only interpret as overwhelming awe and respect.<br/>

RE: OT How beautiful your autumn (keep politics out)?

Hey, it's not Autumn for everyone!

Some of us live in the bottom hemisphere. [:)]

Spring is moving on here in S.Africa. The rains started last night; we still don't have power at home (and therefore also no WITP). [:(]

Not me. I drive a Mazda now, but will be buying a Toyota HiLux double cab pickup if I stay in Africa. Best reliability and parts availability for the sort of places I tend to end up living.

I was just going to say that: Japanese industrial sites in China need Oil. And don't forget about the industrial cities in Formosa (Tainan and Taipei, I think), and in SE Asia (Singapore, Bangkok and Saigon).

Beer was definitately a medium of exchange in ancient Sumeria. One of earliest law "books" (well it was carved in stone) has a register of proper salaries for officials measured in Beer!

RE: Slightly OT... who here speaks chinese and or Japanese?

Ugh! Both Chinese and Japanese sound horribly intimidating to me! I'm thinking about where to live after S.Africa, and SE Asia looks attractive... except for learning their languages (and they aren't as hard as Chinese or Japanese).

RE: OT Beer History do not bring in idiot politics into this thread

<t> Hmmm... Beer AND Wine! Had a couple of Windhoek Lagers with Chinese food dinner last night. And am going to have some good red vino at a Braai (BBQ) tonight - fresh sausages, chorizo and lamb chops, plus some rabbit food. It's hard to buy a bottle of bad wine in S.Africa.<br/>
