Germans were good Strategists - Devil's Advocate

<t> As a gesture of reconciliation for some bad feelings I inadvertently caused with a post on this I would like to play Devil's advocate and argue the opposite position. I readily admit that my writing style can come across as abrasive and arrogant, but this arises from an enthusiasm for this ...

RE: Great Book - Why the Germans are Strategic Idiots

<t> Leriano, are you saying that all military history is a waste of time? A strange view for a player of wargames. Of course if the Germans had won they would be considered geniuses. But they lost. The question is why they lost. Military history is an attempt to answer such questions. You should try ...

RE: Consideration of a Courage Rating

<t> Oh, so it was the title of my post that really got your dander up. Look, I am not putting myself forth as a strategic genius or I know better than you. I may be wrong, goodness knows I have been before. I don't KNOW that the Germans were very, very bad at strategy, it is just my opinion based ...

Bad spelling of vitiate does not vitiate an argument. Thanks, I don't mind being corrected. How else am I to spell it correctly next time.

Read the superb Germany and the Second World War

<t> I am on the last day of my monthly access to the internet so I would like to recommend this title(s) for two reasons:<br/>
<br/>
Now, I am not claiming I'm the first person in the world to discover these; many on the forums may have read them. I just wanted to mention them in a post for those ...

RE: Great Book - Why the Germans are Strategic Idiots

<t> The historian, Robert Citino, is a respected military who is an authority on the Prussian army from Frederick through WWII. And this is not revisionist history. Where have you been? The German army of WWI WWII has been criticized for 30 years now at least by a range of military historians for ...

RE: Consideration of a Courage Rating

<t> i am a world class mathematician. 10 x 1,000+ 10,000, not 40,000. Nonetheless the point remains valid. I am wrong in another fact, pointed out to me on another thread. There were 4,000 Zulus at Roarkes Drift, which I now remembered, - confused the two. My corrector says 15-18k Zulus at Islawanda ...

RE: Of Difficulties Levels and Tactical Combat

<t> Good stuff, I had not heard this. But I do doubt the 15-18,000 number, that seems far too high. Yet still, considerating the technology difference and the awful mess those rifles, which were very large caliber, made of an unprotected human body (the Zulus essentially fought naked) I believe one ...

RE: Why have the WA and Soviets as one player?

<t> Actually, when Hitler heard of Pearl Harbor he was overjoyed and hastened to declare war on US. He vastly overated the power of Japan ("now that we have an ally who has not been defeated in 3600 years we cannot lose" he proclaimed) and thought that Japan would divert most of America's strength ...

Consideration of a Courage Rating

<t> While writing in another thread, this occured to me. Should there be a unit rating for courage, in some or most wargames? Yes, it can be aruged that this is included, in an abstract way in such ratings as efficiency, morale ect. But courage does not correlate tightly with these; warriors have ...

RE: Of Difficulties Levels and Tactical Combat

<t> Thanks, this should still help make more ai troops and so better battles. Technological advantage in war is a peculiar thing. Sometimes it trumps, sometimes not. It is a delicate problem when playing a wargame, or fighting a war, to know at what point sheer mass tips the scales over quality. And ...

Spartans and Chariots of War - Differences?

<t> I have Spartan and am thinking of getting Chariots of War. From the screen shots and descriptions they seem essentially to be the same game set in different eras. Not that this is bad; the Spartan design is so good I would like it in most times. Are there any real differences between the two ...

Gates of Troy-Spartan Zoom? Vista?

<t> I see on another site that if you have Spartan and install GOT then the GOT zoom feature with also work with Spartan. Can anyone confirm this? I don't particularly want GOT but I would get it for this alone. Also, does it work with tactical combat as well as on the strategic map? Are there any ...

I noticed that last night in a battle. It was fought in the large forest north and northwest of the Theban border with Phocis and there were trees everywhere on the tactical map. One should always to bring an adequate number of light troops suitable for forest and rough ...

RE: Opinions on the most useful resources and their tech improvement

<t> A good overall approach. And copper is probably the best resource, other than food/bricks in early game. Oh, I've found you also need marble to create generals and officer training buildings so I become more impressed with the value of marble the more I play. And it usually brings a good price ...

RE: Alliances?

<t> Of course, it is too late now, but Spartan could really have used a Diplomatic Realtions Matrix, so the player can follow the realtions between the multitude of states. But, one could counter argue that, as you point out, you should have to infer these from various data, as it is unrealistic to ...

Given terrain in tactical combat

Does anyone know if the terrain of the battlefield in tactical combat is based, even if loosely, on the type of terrain on the big map that the battle takes place in? Or is it purely random?

Thanks

Opinions on the most useful resources and their tech improvement

<t> The manual suggests that, in the early years at least, you be very sure to have an adequate supply and flow of bricks and food, for obvious reasons. Beyond that, what do you think are most useful resources and the ones to improve tech in? Of course, this will vary greatly depending on the state ...
