RE: Nuts 'n Bolts Questions

Just in case it wasn't clear I wasn't complaining about hedgehogs at all, just trying to figure out why I couldn't make one in this scenario with the Soviets.

In fact I've got no complaints at all about this game, and I've been playing wargames since Avalon Hill's Afrika Korps.

RE: USSR Overwhelming Victory vs AI

<r> bonus - Izyum area KIAs<br/>
This is an interesting screen. You can see the carnage along the Barvenkovo River line; these units died delaying the tnrust north and although they took few with them, they caused a number of step losses in the schwerpunkt. Also note the results of my catastrophic ...

RE: USSR Overwhelming Victory vs AI

<r> The End: Krasnograd & Lanaya<br/>
I already described my huge bungle in not taking the hex to free up the 21st & 23rd armor. This had serious consequences in delaying the taking of Krasnograd. I was never able to take Lanaya. Nor was I able to mount any significant threat from the south toward ...

RE: USSR Overwhelming Victory vs AI

<r> The end: Izyum Area<br/>
The defense of Izyum started fairly well. I left Barvenkovo completely undefended and entrenched just north of the E-W river with artillery behind the trench line (discussed in another thread). This worked well to free up AO <br/>
constraints and delay the German ...

RE: USSR Overwhelming Victory vs AI

<r> I managed to take Liptsy about the 8th turn and hold it for 4-5 turns. Kharkov not even close.&nbsp; I hope to play another game soon and see if I can at least threaten to take Kharkov.&nbsp; My performance on the prime objective remains pathetic.&nbsp; At least I exercised sufficient caution in ...

RE: USSR Overwhelming Victory vs AI

<r> The end:&nbsp; Northern area.&nbsp; Early on I moved the sappers north to grab the bridge just SE of Belgorad and they sat there entrenched until turn 16.&nbsp; The threat appeared to be enough to hold some German units in the area most of the time, reducing the forces they could apply to the ...

USSR Overwhelming Victory vs AI

<r> Maybe not a big deal but it was the second game I played after being crushed in the first one so I earned a smile, kk? <E>:-)</E> I'm going to post a brief AAR if that is permissible in the hopes that other newbs can learn something from my mistakes.<br/>

<r> Thank you JSS.&nbsp; I have to learn to print screens; for some reason my prtScn key isn't working.<br/>

Is it a fair statement then that in the Kharkov scenario, none of the USSR units can hedgehog? Again, I have only played Soviet thus far.&nbsp; I have no questions about Germans ...

RE: Nuts 'n Bolts Questions

<t> ok, I'm surprised but that explains a lot<br/>
<br/>
So when I right click on a German stack (playing USSR) and it says defense 12, for example, that might be completely wrong. But the combat advisor presumably would get it right? I'll have to check that out to see if the CA numbers change ...

Nuts 'n Bolts Questions

<t> Some things I am just not understanding after 1&1/2 games.<br/>
<br/>
* Soviet Hedgehogs<br/>
I have yet to see a single Soviet unit permitted to hedgehog. When I right click the hex concerned, it says "Hedgehog ok", the unit is entrenched, and has not used its Action Capability that turn ...

RE: Help me understand AO re: Belgorad

<t> Yes I can see that unless you want to move a lot of forces a long ways the opportunities are nonexistant, at least during the first six turns.&nbsp; I put one unit up there on the south side of the bridge however and the Germans have kept several units in the area so there may be some value to ...

Should Barvenkovo be defended?

<r> The capture of Barvenkovo by the Axis is the trigger for greater freedom of action for several Soviet HQ groups, specifically the 9th Army, 5th Cavalry Corps, and 57th Army -- virtually the entire Southern flank. Until this capture occurs, these groups, especially the former, are forced to ...

Help me understand AO re: Belgorad

RE: Soviet Union Decisive Victory!

<t> Thank you Gregor for the advice. I think I made every mistake in the book in my first play through and managed to get cut in half by turn 14. I can't wait to finish this one and retry. I had to lol at using my artillery during the first couple turns since I think I had put off learning how to ...

Your efforts, though incomplete were certainly not a waste. I'm reading through all the AARs and learning from each one. I thank you very much for your meticulous efforts.

RE: Kharkov hedgehog and artillery tutorial

<t> That was fantastic Chris, thanks so much for the time you took putting it together. I'm just starting with the game and haven't considered using "soak off" attacks to reduce steps. Plus the different screens you used showed me some new ways to visualize what is going on.<br/>
