Re: before buying...

If you want to play against a good AI you will surely be disappointed by War in the Pacific. There is no strategic thinking at all by the AI; only a set of predetermined scripts that it follows. The AI will happily sail its carriers into random places deep in the South Pacific while unescorted ...

Re: Port Blockade

If subs and patrol groups can't blockade at all, what does "groups of the same type" mean?

Does that mean that we need at least 3 identical ship types? (e.g., 3 x DD works, but 2 x DD + 1 BB won't)

Or does "of the same type" refer collectively to the list "destroyer, cruiser, battle, and carrier ...

Re: Great Game but...

Maybe for WP2 there could be a deployable improvement or unit, something like "Port Facilities", that would represent Mulberrys in Normandy or Ulithi in the Pacific.

Re: Japanese AI hung up in Bangkok?

Thanks Alvaro!

Although the problem may be more is that Bangkok is useless, rather than dangerous. I only came near Bangkok recently. Otherwise I have been pushing up the Solomons and the Marshalls with no response from the AI... seems like Truk or even the Home Islands would be a better place.

I ...

Japanese AI hung up in Bangkok?

I started my first full campaign game, as Allies vs Japanese AI in the 1942 scenario.

After one early battle in the Solomons, it seems like the entire Japanese navy holed up in Bangkok and has stayed there for the entire game. Here is the combat report when the British launched a naval air strike ...

Re: Shore bombardment levels

While we're on the subject, is the effect of shore bombardment linear with the number of bombarding ships? Or is there a point of diminishing returns?

Re: Basic naval tactics?

Thanks, I understand the basic mechanics of how to attack with a CV.

My issue, as I posted in the first message, is that my CVs get clobbered by a surface intercept when I try to move them within 3 hexes. Is that just normal and expected?

Re: Basic naval tactics?

Thanks eskuche, that is helpful.

Is it possible to attack a surface fleet with carriers without getting the "carriers caught in surface combat"?

I'm still confused about something that basic, how to attack enemy naval units with carrier air on your turn.

Re: Do all enemy-controlled hexes generate recon?

As your supply catches up to those hexes that are enemy controlled they flip control.

Only situation they don't is when neither side can get supply to a hex.

Regardless any enemy hex with zero supply does NOT provide recon.

OK, thanks Alvaro, glad to know I don't need to worry about flipping ...

Basic naval tactics?

Is there a post somewhere describing the basics of naval tactics? I've played WPE but pretty much ignored naval warfare there. I don't think I understand how to use naval units.

Here's an example of what I mean: I started the Solomons scenario as the Allies. After took Tulagi and Henderson field, a ...

RE: Torpedo bombers and bombing accuracy

<r> Well far be it for a lowly newb like me to dispute Alfred, but one is tempted to call shenanigans. I re-ran some turns, and here are combat reports from three days of air attacks by Devastators equipped with bombs against various Japanese TFs in May 1942. Every such attack is recorded here:<br ...

IME, flak thrown up by the bigger ships has an effect of deterring low-flying TBs. Unless the TB leader is a real fire-eater on the aggression scale, he will tend to go after ships with weaker flak. Low value xAKs are often chosen when there ...

<t> Was this ever resolved?<br/>
<br/>
I'm playing Andy Mac's updated Scenario 2 vs Japanese AI, and some Devastators from Lexington ran out of torpedo sorties. They then attacked some Japanese transports with GP bombs, and performed with very high accuracy from 15k feet. (This is May 1942).<br ...

<t> Thanks Alfred - I read through the thread and did not see any mention of op mode other than Rest, nor of particular orders.<br/>
