Re: Northern Fury 19 - Decapitation 23/2/94

For Sparrows, 19nm (50%) generally works well enough (just be sure to follow Straight In as discussed). Sidewinders are fine at 5nm. I take the view that anything a Sidewinder hits is a bonus. Occasionally, I've found it useful to have them fire at the maximum 10nm, just to make enemy aircraft evade ...

Re: Northern Fury 19 - Decapitation 23/2/94

In my case, either 50% or, in the case of Phoenixes, 30nm.

If the Soviets fire first, I manually Burner away having Unassigned from any Mission and set Ignore Plotted Course to No. They usually miss under those circumstances, whereupon I return to the attack. It was hard to do this in the last ...

Desert Storm 1 - Invasion 1/8/90

Though it has a few silly features to create some ‘action’, the opening scenario of Desert Storm is primarily about logistics. The player has to transport a variety of aircraft to Saudi Arabia and Incirlik airbase in SE Turkey, thereby establishing the basis for the upcoming air war against Saddam’s ...

Re: Northern Fury 22 - Vagar Vengeance 25/2/94

Glad you enjoyed it and it's up to you how you play the game, but it isn't really a legitimate win unless you play the scenario the way it was designed.

The Russian Oscar strike is, indeed, very hard to stop and I lost this one twice before realising that the best strategy is not to mount the ...

Re: Northern Fury 19 - Decapitation 23/2/94

The Iceland scenarios are almost all very tough and frustrating, so don't be too hard on yourself here.

It probably wasn't the jamming that was causing your weapons to miss - they're just not very accurate. Even a Phoenix really needs to be fired at 30nm or less to stand a decent chance because, as ...

Re: Northern Fury 40 - Tongs 16/3/94

Sounds like a way of fixing the underwater bug. However, I had no trouble hitting the piers with AGM-84s. On the other hand (and this was the problem), there just doesn't seem to be a way of using buddy illumination weapons reliably. When they did work in this playthrough, it was when I ordered the ...

Re: Mediterranean Fury 3 - Casbah Crunch 14/2/94

Bainbridge might struggle to reach the assembly area due to time constraints, but should survive. She's very useful for dealing with the Algerian MiG-29s, but needs to watch-out for submarines.

Not sure about the multiple tanker situation. I never use missions for tankers and control them manually ...

Re: Mediterranean Fury 3 - Casbah Crunch 14/2/94

There are a few issues here. The incident you refer to involved the Libyans catching some of my fighters refuelling. In this case, I altered the tankers' and fighters' Doctrine to Never for refuelling, which enabled the former to get away. This should still work.

When I played this, the rules of in ...

Northern Fury 40 - Tongs 16/3/94

Situation

The Roosevelt and Enterprise CVBGs (TF20.1) aim to interdict Soviet command and communications infrastructure in Norway. It transpired that the Hammer strikes hit a decoy instead of the Archangel Corps HQ, while Anvil damaged, but did not destroy the IADS. The Soviets have been using ...

Re: Showcase - Icebreakers 18/8/25

Thanks for the advice. I'd heard that there were some desperately-difficult scenarios in Shifting Sands. Then again, I'd wondered how interested anyone would be in Desert Storm which, on the face of it, lacks charisma compared to other DLCs.

Yeah, I could have made more use of my fighters as you ...

Re: Showcase - Icebreakers 18/8/25

Sounds like the answer.

I'm really struggling to keep up with the incidence of new versions. Looked on My Page this morning and that wasn't even showing the one I'm using now. I remember that there was another place where one could look for new (non-Beta) versions, but not where to find it.

Re: Showcase - Icebreakers 18/8/25

By the way, I'm currently running Version 1.09.1825.15.

Took a look at the WRA/Doctrines windows and could not see the option that Kushan mentioned. Perhaps it is only available on a later version of the game?

Re: Showcase - Icebreakers 18/8/25

Just took a look. The Lua logs don't give any clues, but the Exception Log does contain some errors (see attached).

As for the SAM allocation, I'll have a closer look next time I play and see if I can see what you mean.

Showcase - Icebreakers 18/8/25

Situation

The rationale behind this scenario is somewhat far-fetched – or is it?. Climate change has been reducing the extent of Arctic sea ice and some governments and corporations regard this as an opportunity to access mineral resources that were previously out of reach. This has led to the ...

Situation

The Nimitz and Vinson carrier groups (TF20.2) aim to neutralise the Bodo, Evenes, Andoya and possibly Bardufoss airbases in Northern Norway and also destroy the HQ of the Soviet Archangel Corps (near Evenes). Given the Russians’ frustrating ability to replace losses of aircraft and SAMs ...

Re: Northern Fury 38 - Hammer 14/3/94

Hadn't thought of that one. The downside to that approach is that it would wake-up the enemy fighters before the strike planes went in with the GBU-15s and 24s, which would tend to balance-out any gains. Chances are that they can muster more than the initial group of six Flankers if you hang around ...
