Kuril Sunrise 29/10/18

Balance of Forces

The rather unlikely premise for this one is that a populist government takes power in Japan and decides to go to war with Russia over the Kuril Islands, which extend NE from Hokkaido towards Kamchatka and were ceded to the USSR at the end of WW2. So far, hostilities have been ...

Re: what exactly do the special actions in "Salvo" do?

What I don't like about this feature is that it makes no allowance for initiative on the part of the isolated unit, which proceeds to behave stupidly or even suicidally in most cases. Granted, some players would role-play this honestly if allowed to continue controlling the unit, while others wouldn ...

Re: Pacific Fury 4 - I Come from a Land Down Under 15/2/94

Day 4

06:00Z: The Endeavour convoy fell foul of the game’s lousy automatic navigation (Pathfinder) system while trying to weave through the Buliluyan Strait and decided to go the long way around. Corrected this by moving it in small stages at a time.

08:00Z: I realised belatedly that, despite ...

Re: Pacific Fury 4 - I Come from a Land Down Under 15/2/94

Day 3
04:00Z: Day 3 started chaotically as the buggy nature of the scenario asserted itself. First, the damaged Orion that was limping back to Guam simply vanished when I re-loaded the game – at least it wasn’t recorded or scored as lost and it would have been out for the duration, anyway.

Re: Pacific Fury 4 - I Come from a Land Down Under 15/2/94

Interesting.

The problem with the Skyhawks and the Sampsons was that the Yankee Notch's strike happened during my attack on the Russian convoy, so I didn't see the missiles coming until it was too late. It's the sort of simultaneous timing I tend to suffer from and, the bigger the scenario, the ...

Re: Pacific Fury 4 - I Come from a Land Down Under 15/2/94

Day 2

Well, as Bart was keen for me to continue into Day 2 and I’m happy to help with his project in any way I can, here it is. Overall, it was an improvement on Day 1.

03:00Z: The Berget Danuto duly sank which, of course, wrongly cost us 25VP (a poor reward for saving Darwin). It also caused ...

Re: Pacific Fury 4 - I Come from a Land Down Under 15/2/94

You're probably right. After all, the Fury series is essentially 'the game of the book that might be written sometime' and a lot of it is about the story. Nonetheless, it does take a long time to play, with the performance issues sometimes bringing my machine to a complete stop and the bugs don't ...

Pacific Fury 4 - I Come from a Land Down Under 15/2/94

Balance of Power
Three days into WW3, Combined Task Force 165 is formed with the intention of reinforcing Western-aligned and oil-rich Brunei, which is threatened with isolation by various threats. The Soviets have been permitted to use the Vietnamese base at Camranh Bay, even though Vietnam has ...

Don of a New Era 10/11/2016

Order of Battle
This scenario assumes that the Russo-Ukrainian War broke-out in 2016 and that NATO got involved from Day 1. It covers the opening 24 hours of the conflict. You can play either side, but NATO is the default, so I chose accordingly.

NATO is limited to air and naval forces, as ground ...

Re: Pacific Fury 3 - Caught Flat Footed 13/2/94

13:00Z: Responding to the insurgent attacks, Cubi Point released a patrol craft, the Spectre, armed with 20mm and 12.7mm guns and this exchanged fire with the Chung Dho and a second rebel craft, taking some damage but sinking the former. As for airpower, I did have some Tiger IIs with night-time ...

Re: Pacific Fury 3 - Caught Flat Footed 13/2/94

That's certainly one way to rationalise it.

OK, you guys have talked me into re-starting and (despite a series of unsolicited Microsoft updates paralysing my computer - couldn't even use the mouse at one point), I've managed to stabilise the situation, ending the problems at Cubi Point and running ...

Re: Pacific Fury 3 - Caught Flat Footed 13/2/94

The idea was to move the CVBG to the RP zone at Cruise, keeping my distance from the Soviet task group so that they couldn't use their Sunburns, while maintaining ASW cover. I was reasonably confident that I could stop the Sandboxes, especially as they were coming-in in small batches, though you ...

Pacific Fury 3 - Caught Flat Footed 13/2/94

This scenario covers the outbreak of war in the Philippines. The USS Constellation CVBG is off NE Luzon and in badly-disjointed shape when it is confronted by a powerful Soviet battlegroup approaching from the NE. An insurgency then breaks-out in the Philippines and you somehow have to deal with ...

Commonwealth Collision 9/6/18

In this one, war breaks out between India and Pakistan in 2018 over rocket attacks by Islamist militias in Kashmir, India having evidence that the insurgents were given advanced weapons by Islamabad. Some British observers were killed in the attack and this has persuaded the UK Government to throw ...

Re: Pacific Fury 1 - Bolt from the Blue 13/2/94

Shows it can be done. Excellent piece of analysis and planning, though doing the manual targeting must have been pretty hectic stuff (presumably with the minimum game speed setting). I must learn how to use the Formation Editor properly. Remember making decent use of it to get a British win in ...

Pacific Fury 2 - Bombeska on Hokkaido 13/2/94

In this one, you play the Soviet side as they attempt to neutralise American and Japanese forces on Hokkaido to facilitate the passage of their ships and aircraft into the North Pacific via La Perouse Strait (between Hokkaido and Sakhalin). Coincidentally, I was actually in Hokkaido in 1994, albeit ...

Re: Indian Fury #3, missiles are crap

I'm actually surprised that you got such good chances to hit. I normally use Phoenixes at about 20nm range and (where the scenario permits) set BVR doctrine to Follow Missile Straight In to stop them going blind as the F-14 cranks.

As Dimitris says, things didn't go your way with the virtual dice ...

Re: Mediterranean Fury 2 - Syrian Surprise 13/2/94

Well done. I should definitely have used the Incirlik fighters to defend Cyprus and the Iowa, but was concerned that their own base would come under attack. I guess Turkish fighters could have been moved from further N to cover this risk.

Black Gold Blitz Re-visited 20/11/17

I actually played this one some time ago and won rather easily as the Saudis. Ever since, I’ve wondered how I would manage as Iran, so it seemed as good a place as any to start my playthrough of the Command:LIVE scenarios.

To recap, tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran escalated during 2017, with ...

Yeah, Engaged Defensive is such a pathologically useless setting. I never use Auto Evasion for anything, but the AI does to its recurring cost.
