Re: Unrealistic strait in Denmark

Maybe the map could be re-jiggered so that the Kiel Canal is set up like the Suez Canal with a port on one end. In the game, this set-up of the Suez has the effect of forcing the Axis to take Port Said (the town and port) before they can move ships freely through the Suez Canal. I think this is ...

Re: US supply to USSR via Pacific

Just to clarify: In the match in question--I had also taken The British Isles in 1940.

Cpl. Rearguard, you are correct that usually there is no convoy route shown between the US West Coast and Vladivostok, BUT in this match I could see one (my opponent has since resigned). And I confirmed from the ...

US supply to USSR via Pacific

I may have misread the Strategic Advice panel when it displayed during my latest game, but it seemed to be saying that Japan could block the trans-Pacific supply convoys from the US to the USSR by taking ANY ONE of a list of cities. One city on the list was Honolulu. Playing as Axis, I took Honolulu ...

But why do either?
You might need to if your Engineer unit is trying to build fortifications near the frontline--or, as can happen in Russia, the frontline suddenly comes to the Engineers!

Very interesting! I haven't tried WitP...perhaps I should.

Re: what do the NM values of various cities really mean?

Thanks for the clarification, Cpl. Rearguard. (BTW I've enjoyed your icon for years--still makes me chuckle!)

So, let me see if I have this right: the taking of a city or resource hex will only knock off the designated number of NM points from the (often large) totals of NM points (shown in the NM ...

what do the NM values of various cities really mean?

This question has almost certainly been answered before, so forgive me if I missed it, BUT
I would like to know if there is any consistent correlation between the NM value that appears on the map and the NM penalty (in percentage points) that a Major Power suffers when an NM Objective is taken for ...

Re: France conquest rules

Thanks for your reply, Bill. Unfortunately, the gamey option of surrounding but not taking Paris while you clean up the rest of Metropolitan France and North Africa is still alive.
Was it always the case that Paris reverted to being the primary capital if the Axis said yes to the conquer-all-France ...

AA units OP?

Anyone else feel that AA units are too powerful defensively vs. infantry? I understand their defense value vs. tanks (the German 88 mm was of course originally a flak gun that proved to be a great tank killer, and I think there were similar examples in other militaries), but can't tell you the ...

Re: France conquest rules

A fascinating detour into the mechanics of the surrender rules, but my point was that France, under certain circumstances, is given more resilience than either the USSR or China (as measured by the number of Alternate Capitals). My contention is that Oran should not be France's third Alternate ...

Re: Iraq coup oddity

OK, Bill you win! While playing a turn in another match, which has a similar situation in the Middle East, I checked the Strategy Guide and figured out what happened. The SG states that for DE 107 to fire, Alexandria must be in Allied hands. In both matches, my backdoor attack on Egypt involved ...

Re: Iraq coup oddity

Bill,
I have to admit that I am not absolutely certain, BUT I am fairly sure my Allied opponent still had an active convoy route from Iraq when I attacked it AFTER conquering Egypt. Wouldn't that mean Iraq had not swung toward the Axis? Would I have received a notification about Iraq swinging toward ...

France conquest rules

I read the recent discussion about the French morale boost for surviving into Fall '40 and I also understand why France has to get a morale boost if the Germans elect to go for "all of France" and aim to take Algiers. If France didn't get such a boost, then it would very likely surrender due to ...

Re: Iraq coup oddity

My suggestion would be that Cairo becomes a trigger hex for the coup script (sans Sabine, b/c with Cairo in Axis hands, Sabine rightly becomes impossible). Jerusalem can be too easy for the Axis to grab with an Amphib against an unwary Allied player and having it as a trigger hex probably would lead ...

First, let me just sing the praises of this great game! I had to stop playing for a few years, but on return., I'm finding it to be an evergreen classic. Thanks, Hubert and Bill, and everyone else who works on this game!
Now, a minor bone to pick about the pro-Axis coup in Iraq. As I understand it ...

Umeu, thanks for all the insights. I had no idea there were so many ways to accomplish this!
And, although I wouldn't call myself a "top player," I do still like taking Poland in one turn, despite the Russian mobilization (dis)advantage.
I like to follow the ...

Re: Poland in one turn

Isn't there also a huge drawback as the USSR mobilization doesn't decrease since they don't get to invade eastern Poland?

I was not aware of this! May need to re-think my strategy. I generally try to take Poland in one turn in order to invade the Low Countries (or at least Belgium and Lux) as ...
