Quick answer would be anything without seeking (which mostly means not a missile/torpedo) which is assigned to a hardpoint with a narrow arc of fire. A related bug can lead to AI building extra ships when advisor suggests to build; in this case money is not deducted, so free but unasked for ships.

And/or to give independence, as an option that would not depend upon passenger/colony ships. Inability to abandon a world in any way is at best an annoyance, and at worst seems to lead to some bugs like the one mentioned by OP.

Travel routes seem to be OK, but I know what you mean, something very strange is going on there (though patch notes imply it might be fixed now). The first colony I could make in a nebula, that seemed way further away than all the others I couldn't build in, would let me send a colony ship to it ...

Same here, as far as I can tell, advisor never takes into account if colonization is possible, just if the independent would allow it if it was.

Something might have changed in the new patch, but this example seems to be the only exception. Suddenly, I can colonise Ackdara in the QN683 system. Only change is that I colonised Maxus started a war and captured Cappa.

Not exactly sure what it was, but could have been retrofitting/constructing related. Ran the game for a few months, and they had all pretty much left and gone off on missions again.

Anyone had anything like this before? I've heard of big queues of freighters waiting to dock, nearly all of these guys are just hanging around with no mission. Seems very unlikely there is no demand for shipping, I've got free trade agreements with half the galaxy and have been expanding colonies ...

I think some tech does link backwards normally, but I was just wondering if you had random tech paths on in your game, which does very often cause weird backwards links.

Edit: Made me think of this, pretty minor and more amusing than anything. May as well post it here in case tech support thinks it ...

I seemed to do OK with a fleet of cruisers, destroyers and frigates, of about equal strength to the hive. Around tier 3-4 tech. I didn't optimise the fleet with hive in mind, so some of my loadouts were definitely not ideal. About the normal ratio of ships for an attack fleet.
