Well, I did some more testing and at first I couldn't get the passive sonar to work in either 1243.4 or 1243.5. I modified my approach to the Submarine Tutorial 1.1 and set periscope depth instead of "shallow" - and in either version, once the ship has been spotted by periscope, it is then picked up ...

I didn't get a chance to try 1243.4 before it was replaced by 1243.5, but in 1243.5 this issue appears to persist. Just loading up the Submarine Tutorial 1.1 I can't seem to get the passive sonar to find the ship under any circumstances.
