The only way to do that is to break the platoon into two or more sections and make formations for them and then create one larger formation with all the sections joined.

I dont see any reason this would be impossible.

I could see a number of ways a map like this could be done. Your first step would be to get some pictures of a real blast site. Like one of the two japanise cities one was used on.
