RE: Seafire?

<t> I'd say it depends on how "general" you want the title to be. If the categories are sufficiently narrow, it becomse possible to pick out the winners. "Best Four-Engined Heavy Bomber" I'd go for. Just plain "Best Bomber," though? Too many choices, in too many different roles.<br/>

RE: I sunk the Yamamoto with one torpedo!!!

<t> I don't know. Maybe. If the torpedo actually struck the keel and detonated in contact with the ship's bottom... Remember this is an air-launched torpedo - it belongs over at the "smaller and less powerful" end of the spectrum. Also, did any nation put magnetic detonators on aircraft torpedos? I ...

RE: I sunk the Yamamoto with one torpedo!!!

<t> While I agree that a magazine penetration isn't in it, progressive flooding might still account for the loss. Granted that it would require a very bad day even by IJN standards of DC, but it's the only mechanism I can think of which would allow one dinky little airborne torpedo to sink something ...

<r> Tiornu: <br/>
I'm afraid I don't agree. The mission where the Seafire's advantages in climb and accceleration really make it a standout is deck-launched intercept; for maintaining a standing CAP, however, more endurance is better. It translates into more flexibility for the entire force - in ...

RE: Invasion of the home islands

<r> Retaining the Emperor was not a <B><s></s>condition<e></e></B> of the Japanese surrender, which was <B><s></s>unconditional<e></e></B>. That was a decision taken later by MacArthur's occcupation forces. On a pragmatic note, it made the occupation and reconstruction of Japan much ...

RE: Name these Pilots!!!

<r> The fun thing about Japanese victory claims is that, unlike the air services of every other nation I'm aware of, it doesn't seem that anyone in Japan was even trying to verify those claims at the time. It doesn't even appear to have occurred to anyone. The deliberate destruction of records by ...

<r> Pick a delusion, any delusion - I bet I can find "some scholars" to swear it's the Gospel truth. This one is much the same. Try Richard Frank's <U><s></s>Downfall<e></e></U> for a very good treatment of the subject, from primary sources.<br/>

<r> Indeed. Blackburn makes it quite clear that VF-17, once equipped with the new F4U-1A*, was fully operational by the time <I><s></s>Bunker Hill<e></e></I> reached the Pacific. The only real problem with the F4U was that Vought couldn't build Corsairs even half as fast as Grumman could ...

RE: Gamey or not?

<r> I have to agree with the 'gamey' camp here. True, both sides occasionally flew off their carrier-based squadrons to operate from shore in critical situations - but in almost every case, it was after their home CVs had been damaged and had to get out of Dodge. IMO, several previous posters called ...

RE: Japanese aircraft names instead of allied codenames

<t> Well, looks like you beat me to it. I did find an alternate translation of Goshikisen as "Year Five Fighter" (as Reisen was the "Year Zero Fighter"). Neither of these translations would appear to represent an "official nickname" such as was bestowed upon IJAAF types from the Ki-43 Hayabusa on ...

RE: Japanese aircraft names instead of allied codenames

<t> Maybe. It could also be that "goshikisen" was an unofficial name bestowed by crews rather than an Official IJAAF Codename. Just out of curiosity, do you happen to have a translation of "goshikisen"? That could help clear things up - or then again, it might not.<br/>

I've seen that in a couple of places, but by far the majority of the references I've seen claimed that the Ki-100 was either unnamed or continued as "Hien," reflecting its origin.

RE: Tactical Game

<t> I can only speak for myself, but my aversion to RT"S" games is based on my aversion to the game mechanics of the genre. The basic "strategy" for nearly all of them is the same: build a big gaggle of units and then rush them at your opponent, and hope it's enough to win. Some units may have ...
