I ended up just using the link and downloading the file
from the Matrix Games FTP site.

Maybe you should try that.

Did you play the game with a version before V2.1?
If so, was it crashing then?

It hasn't crashed for me yet, but I have only played 1 hour or so.

I'm running Direct-X 9 and the game seems to work just fine, so I don't think that is your problem...

The copy of SUDG I got was version 1.0. This was before the newer package with version 2.0 was released. I keep hearing on this board about a 'Player's Guide' booklet that came with Version 2.0. What is this, do I already have it on the version 1.0 CD? Can I download it somewhere?

I had quite a few problems going from the retail Version 1.0 straight to Version 2.0. Installing the patches in order fixed all the crazy crashes and bugs I had found. Including this strange problem with the opening movies. Hope this works for you...

The version number in the upper right corner is V2.0. The patch did try to install into the wrong directory, but I changed it before I started the install. I tried to reinstall the patch but I'm getting the same error. Maybe I should try re-installing the whole thing.

The version I have wasn't V2.0. So I installed the patch before I started to play. So Yes, I have V2.0. I'm not sure if V1.0 has the problem because I never tried it.

Your quick fix seems to work, but I would like to know what is causing the error.
