RE: OT - Naval Deployment In the South China Sea

<t> reunification of SK with NK would very much reduce the plight of NK people. China however should not be allowed to bully Formosa. And I suspect the folks on Taiwan would fight hard against aggression. That said I feel the US should sell Taiwan whatever they want to buy, and keep a carrier battle ...

Not new, and almost too detailed, even for us grognards, are Friedman's various books on US ship classes.

Training and rear area CAP. Once you get into it with the IJN you will lose quite a few F6Fs and Corsairs, and their replacement rates are not huge. I would keep at least 3-4 Sqs worth in the pool for when you go into hard core battle.

RE: How can I defend an air base against 10+ attacks in one turn?

<t> As GA mentioned, large ambushes work well. If he wants to hit some bases to your rear, so be it. Longer range means more ops losses. If you are going to defend something, really defend it, trying to defend everything means not defending anything terribly well - think of all or nothing protection ...

RE: My first go at this game, very enjoyable!

<t> The most important thing is what RJ said - set cruise speed to avoid/limit additional flooding. And get to a port. Depending on condition and distance this could be a piddly little port, disband and hope for the best. Even badly roughed up Allied ships are lost [:'(]if they get to a midsize port ...

RE: My first go at this game, very enjoyable!

<t> You traded 2 USN CVs for the two IJN CVs? That's pretty good for this stage of the war, though when I played the full campaign I did everything possible to keep the USN CVs safe. But the Coral Sea scenario is a good one to get a feel for how things run. In the Grand campaign you won't want your ...

RE: Rust Buckets: Not your father's Navy

<t> The whole US military has become enamored very high tech, in theory very diverse mission capable platforms. The one things these platforms have in common is huge unit costs and huge cost overruns. Thus you have the desire to wipe out A-10s to try and fund F-35s (they can do everything of course ...
