You most likely won the game with the IJN auto victory conditions. Patch 1.5 has a fix to the victory screen shoot, so that it appears before you get sent back to the main menu.

As an ad-hoc group or retreating cover force, they would use a torpedo attack. A captain on his own fighting for survival will do what is best for his chance of returning home.
As a formed task group under command, they would use gun line tactics I believe.

<t>After reading the US Navy after action reports for battle of Guadalcanal and Tassafaronga, and watching the interviews of different USN officers and IJN sailors who survived those battles, I will have to strongly disagree with mdiehl about pre war training.<br/>

Auto Victory conditions

Will Witp have Instant Victory conditions?
If yes, please allow play to continue past them to the Ultimate Victory.
Did not like having IJN UV game cut short, when Luganville is taken after 1/1/43 with supplies, the game is ended with IJN auto victory.

<t>IJA often used night combat, but to say they were better at it.<br/>
Early in the war they were succesful at it, but their losses were sometimes very high.<br/>
The US used a night attack to take the airfield at Buna. Lt Robert Odell's account was very good, and most of his unit was killed or ...

Hate to be a bother, but since this is a show stoper for my IJN campaign.
Were you able to repeat this;
If not I will look more at my system,
If yes then I will go back a day in saves and change orders on 1/1/43 to try and get around to 1/3/43.
Thanks.

And the commander understand to stay with Main Body (DO NOT React to Enemy) or detach ...
